Google closes the objects laboratory for AR Poly in 2021

Google announced the closure of Poly, his project for the creation of digital 3D objects with a platform that acts as a library for AR and VR developers. Announced with an email yesterday, Wednesday 2 December, it marks yet another case of a project closed by Mountain View in the field of digital content creation.

Google closes its doors to Poly

Poly was born as a three-dimensional object creation tool designed by Google to provide one developer library. Who can contribute with their own digital objects but can also use the platform to insert elements in augmented reality or objects in virtual reality in videos or applications. According to the email, users can continue uploading assets until April 30 2021. All items remain available at download until June 30, 2021, when the Poly site and all its APIs are no longer accessible.

“We appreciate the trust you have placed in us to host your assets and to give them a place to shine. The incredible work our users uploaded to Poly every day surprised us, humbled us and enchanted us. And we have to thank you ”. It can be read in the email sent to subscribers to the platform.

Although Google continues to add new augmented reality elements to its services thanks to the Google AR Kit (for example he recently brought koalas into everyone's homes) 3D object libraries are closing rather quickly. Google itself closed the DayDream platform in October 2019, for virtual reality on mobile. In that case, the motivation was that the company did not see VR on smartphones "viable in the long run".

It seems that Google has lost some faith in the development of AR and VR. However, developers can find many alternatives online and we are confident that others will emerge to replace Google Poly.
