One of the most positive gaming trends on this generation of consoles is the advent of cross-platform gaming. This is where gamers who are playing a game can not only play that game with players on other platforms but also join a team to enjoy playing with friends. This means that if your main system is an Xbox One, you can still play games with friends on PS4 or PC, for example. It also means that those games with smaller communities aren't fragmented by the platforms they're on.
The trend was driven this generation by the rocket league alternative football game, and has since been implemented in a number of games. The benefits are obvious to see, and the push for more multiplatform is a big plus to enter the next generational space.
Not all games support cross play, but the list grows as we move forward into the future with major publishers like EA placing a heavy emphasis on cross play in their future titles.
