Total War Saga: Will Troy support crossplay between Steam and the Epic Games Store?

A new entry in the Total War franchise is coming called Total War Saga: Troy. It will present the epic and large-scale battles that the other games in the series are known for, with new mechanics and combat scenarios. The game will first release on the Epic Games Store and have a Summer 2021 release for Steam. Because there will be two storefronts with the game, will players who own storefronts purchased from separate versions be able to play together through cross-play?

Unfortunately, it looks like developer Sega won't be supporting any form of cross-play between the two versions. In their Game FAQ on the Total War Saga: Troy main site, they specifically say that they have no future plans to build a viable cross-platform game between the Epic Games Store and the Steam copies.

Because Troy will be available a year before the game's release on Steam, the likelihood that this current course of action may change during that time. But for now, Sega has made the decision not to make this open to more platforms. Epic Games Store appears to be receiving a lot of perks, such as those who play on this platform have a chance to receive the game for free if they claim it within the first 24 hours of launch which is August 13, 2020.

The only downside many Total War fans can find with the Epic Games Store is the fact that it doesn't have mod support. However, the concept is on the roadmap for the showcase, so when these become available, members of the mod community will be able to make them available to everyone on the Epic Games Store, and they will be available in Troy. .

Hopefully Sega's cross-play platform has chances, but for now that's a step for players on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
