What are the shooting stars in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

If you've explored your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons at night, you may have noticed shooting stars crossing the sky. If you suspect there is a mechanic behind them, you are right. You may wish a shooting star to obtain Star Fragments to craft a special item, the Magic Wand.

The best way to find shooting stars is to go to an open area of your island with minimal trees at night. Stand there looking at the sky and tilt the camera upwards using the right joystick.

How to get Star Shards

The shooting stars will appear randomly at night, and sometimes an NPC will warn you that they will happen. If you see a shooting star, use the right joystick to point your character's head skyward, then press A to wish on the star.

If this works, the star will get a little bright as it passes and you can then chase away the star fragments the next day. The next day after wishing for a star, shards, both types, will wash on the beach, so be sure to check out all the beaches on your island and collect them all. The Large Star Shard will be quite rare, and you usually only get one each time.

And that's it, all you need to know to get your Star Shards.
