GRID Autosport Review

Grid Autosport from the TOCA series is another crown jewel racing game from Codemasters, which has conquered virtually every platform. Finally coming to Android, the game enjoys high praise and is hugely popular among fans of the genre. As the final installment in the series, the game tries a bit to restore the authentic racing style and rewinds the series like Grid 2 did, which audiences have praised to this day. With the major changes in terms of car modes and racing gameplay">gameplay itself, this title is now the developer's most up-to-date modern racer, and certainly a contender in the market.

Development and reception

Codemasters hit the mark with virtually every title in the series. Currently available versions of this game are Grid Autosport Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Switch. The TOCA series is almost entirely published and developed by Codemasters. While they originally focused on touring car racing, the game eventually grew into a wide variety of motorsport subgenres.

We are placed in the seat of a racing driver, inside and outside the race. The game follows a career as a pilot, allowing the player to create one in Career mode for one player, with opportunities for various world championships and competitions. Of course, competitive online multiplayer is a must have, but it also offers a customizable experience in terms of vehicles, types of races, circuits, difficulties, etc. One player also offers Custom Cup mode, while multiplayer is platform-specific, such as split-screen support for Switch.

What is curious, however, is that the customization is only featured this time in multiplayer mode, while other titles in the series also offered it in single player mode. The single player career mode now offers an in-depth experience of a racing career, with seasons, teams and more. The teams available are the best in the racing world, like Ravenwest, who is now returning from Race Driver: Grid. Each season offers different Achievements, Sponsors, and Goals, and progress is also measured using experience points.

Online multiplayer races are done through RaceNet, the exclusive community hub created by Codemasters. Players also gain experience and money, which are used to upgrade or purchase vehicles. The developers also offer various challenges for the multiplayer mode - Challenges RaceNet, while the whole game emphasizes several racing disciplines.

The driving experience itself is very realistic which has only improved over time with the TOCA series, as this title appeared in 2014 with a revamped Damage look and new elements, such as than the anti-wear system. Car parts and other features gradually lose their performance, and the player must be engaged outside of the race as much as in the race. The cockpit view is also included again, revisiting previous installments, while several other cool features include Race Rewind. However, compared to previous versions, this game is a reduced version of a raw race, and the experience is meant to be a reality.

Appearance and graphics

This aspect of the game has evolved over time as well, as each successful TOCA title improved in modeling and graphics, but also in world physics and circuits. The cars are quite lively and beautifully rendered and modeled, with some popular racers like BTCC (C-Class), V8 Supercars (Super Tourers), Stock Car Brasil (A-Class), and others. Classic racers and today's competitors are included like the Ford GT40 MkI, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, Dallara DW12 and others, adding to the versatility of the racing type.
