iPhone 12 records HDR video with Dolby Vision

One of the new features in the iPhone 12 range is the addition of Dolby Vision, a professional HDR video format that offers more accurate and realistic colors along with brighter whites and darker shadows.

Apple says iPhone 12 models are the first devices capable of recording video in Dolby Vision format in real time, in 4K quality at 30 frames per second on iPhone 12 models and in 4K quality at 60 frames per second on Pro models. To achieve this, the devices have a new image signal processor capable of capturing two exposures simultaneously, creating a histogram and generating Dolby Vision metadata based on that histogram.

Apple demonstrated Dolby Vision on the iPhone 12 Pro during the Hi Speed event with a video shot by three Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and also posted a video showing how it was shot on YouTube.

Dolby Vision support is comprehensive on the iPhone 12 range, meaning users can capture, edit and play Dolby Vision video directly on devices. Dolby Vision processing is done automatically and is maintained during editing, which can be done using the Photos, iMovie or Clips apps on the iPhone or in Final Cut Pro on the Mac (a feature that will be available later this year).

What is HDR?

In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range or HDR (High Dynamic Range) images refer to a set of techniques that allow for a better dynamic range of luminances between the brightest and most darker than what standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods can offer.

High dynamic range photography allows you to obtain images more in line with those seen by the human eye, which by observing the world around us is able to distinguish details in areas with a much greater difference in lighting than that supported by other formats like film. or compressed image formats.
