Universal Control is limited to three devices

Universal Control is limited to three devices

Universal Control (Universal Control) is the function whereby simply placing an iPad next to a MacBook Pro or iMac creates a connection to share the MacBook Pro keyboard and trackpad and thus manage the iPad (and the iMac).

What Apple did not specify during the presentation is that this Universal Control is specifically limited to three devices. However, they can be any combination of these:

    • MacBook 2016 or later
    • MacBook Air 2018 or later
    • MacBook Pro 2016 and later
    • iMac (5K Retina 27-inch, Late 2015 or later)
    • iMac Pro
    • Mac mini (2018 or later)
    • iPad Pro
    • iPad Air (3rd generation or later)
    • iPad (6th generation or later)
    • iPad mini (5th generation or later)

So that means yes, Universal Control works with Intel-based Macs too.

Apple says all devices must have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff enabled. Also, they must be within 10 meters and an iPad and Mac cannot be connected to share the Internet connection.

There is another setting that Apple has only briefly touched upon so far. You will be able to use Universal Control on an iPad connected to a Mac via USB.
