Everything We Know About God of War: Ragnarok - Release Date, Consoles, Story, Characters

God of War returns in the sequel to the 2018 game where Kratos is in the midst of Norse mythology. He crosses paths with Modi, Magni, Freya, is constantly chased by Baldur, with Odin and Thor threatening her ever present. The actions of Kratos and his son, Atreus, cause the great winter, Ragnarok. The development and title for the upcoming game was announced during the Sony PlayStation 5 live stream on September 16, 2020.

The next game focuses on how the mighty Æsir gods deal with these two. What do we know about the game so far and when can we expect it?

What is the release date of God of War: Ragnarok?

The little teaser we received at the end of the PlayStation 5 stream didn't contain a lot of details. We only heard Kratos' voice and witnessed the sequel title reveal. No exact date has been provided for the title. However, industry expert Geoff Keighley posted a tweet saying, “GOD OF WAR is coming back in 2021. # PlayStation5”.

While this isn't an official date for God of War: Ragnarok, it is the closest announcement we have for a release window. We got to see Kratos and Atreus return early in the PlayStation 5 cycle, which is always good news.

What is the story?

Considering the title and how God of War 2018 ended, this is a follow-up to the events of Kratos and Atreus traveling to the top of the mountain where the Ice Giants lived in Jotunheim. Kratos will likely have to face Thor and his father, the greatest Norse god of all, Odin, and struggle with Atreus' connection to them, his real name being Loki.

For those who don't know, Loki is at the center of Ragnarok, the end of all things. Odin is obsessed with preventing Ragnarok, and Loki being the main reason he will want to crush him, as well as Kratos, to prevent it, which is usually his downfall. We don't know much about the story, or where Kratos and Atreus are at this time, and we can expect to hear more after the release of PlayStation 5.

Which consoles can play God of War: Ragnarok?

The PlayStation 5 is sure to be your go-to choice for playing the upcoming God of War game. You probably won't be able to play it on an Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Nintendo Switch. However, given the number of recent PlayStation games on PC, this could be a potential choice in the future. Previous PlayStation-exclusive games, such as Horizon: Zero Dawn and Death Stranding, have been released on PC several years, if not months for Death Stranding, after its initial release. Sony said it plans to bring more of its game to Steam for PC gamers to purchase, so God of War could potentially be a future PC title.

For now, however, PlayStation 5 will be the console you can play God of War: Ragnarok on when it releases in 2021.
