Green and Orange Dots on iPhone: What Are They For?

Immediately after updating iPhone and iPad to iOS 14, many users have noticed the presence, in certain situations, of tiny dots of different color in the upper right corner screen. Most people then immediately asked the reason for this and, more specifically, the meaning of these dots. Precisely for this reason, today we are going to explain in detail what it is and why it could improve its security while using Apple devices.

What does the orange dot mean?

The aforementioned dots basically have two colors: orange and green. Obviously the right color will appear only in situations that concern it. So let's start with the orange dot, that is the one dedicated to the microphone.

Apple has in fact decided to further raise the level of privacy while browsing its operating system, thus showing the user which applications and which functions are using the microphone at a specific time. In fact, the orange dot will appear when iOS detects the activation of the microphone and will therefore allow you to understand that in that situation, the iPhone (or the iPad) and more specifically the app currently open, is capturing the audio. from the outside.

Of course this does not mean that every time the orange dot appears someone is acquiring information without permission, but simply that the microphone is active. It will therefore not be difficult to see it while using Siri, voice dictation on any app, a call, the recording an audio message on WhatsApp and the like or other functions of this type.

The even more functional thing is that this dot will appear regardless of the application in use (since it depends on the physical activation of the microphone) and therefore no developer will ever be able to turn it off to your liking. So when should we worry? Only when the dot appears and you are not actually using the microphone for any operation.

What does the green dot mean?

All the considerations made previously will apply exactly the same way for the green dot (for this reason we invite you to read them in case you have not done it), which this time will instead focus on the use of the camera. In fact, this dot will appear when the camera (both front and rear) will start acquiring content

Obviously, to see it appear you will not have to take a photo or record a video first, as it will appear already when the camera is active and ready to capture images, in any application. Also consider that the green dot could include the orange one, for example in the recording of a video, in which the activation of the microphone will certainly not be missing.

Use the Control Center to see recent activity

Finally, Apple has even decided to specify recent activity of these dots within the Control Center, indicating which application used the microphone or camera in the short term. To obtain this information, all you need to do is access the Control Center on your device immediately after seeing one of the two dots appear at the top.
