How to change capital in Crusader Kings 3

How to change capital in Crusader Kings 3

The Crusader Kings 3 version has made a lot of feature changes, and one of those changes is all caps. Capitals got a little bit of love in Crusader Kings 3, but knowing how it works is hard to find in the new UI. Let's find out how to change them.

To change your capital, you must find a province or territory that belongs to you directly. A player can identify the capital of their current kingdom because the province will have a golden crown icon located next to the farm name.

When a player clicks on another of these provinces, they may find a beige arrow with an arrow pointing up. This is your capital indicator. Hovering over the icon will tell you that this province can become your new capital if you wish.

By moving capital, players will gain access to new buildings there. However, if the old capital had exclusive capital buildings, those buildings will become inactive and will no longer provide the bonuses they obtained before.

The type of buildings that can only be built in the capital are duchy buildings. Duchy buildings tend to offer bonuses to the kingdom, or that specific duchy in which the capital resides. These buildings include:

    • Military academies
    • Steps
    • Siege work
    • Royal Armory
    • Jousting grounds
    • Blacksmiths
    • Archery fields
    • Tax offices
    • Leisure center
    • Royal Reserves

These buildings offer a variety of bonuses. Military buildings focus directly on improving your military stats or other bonuses like reducing military costs, size of drawdowns, etc. Meanwhile, different types of buildings grant increased asset taxes, other tax modifiers, and development growth. Finally, some buildings directly reinforce the piety, prestige and stress of a character.

So planning where you want your capital and what buildings you want there is essential for your kingdom. Additionally, a player's direct heir will always inherit the kingdom's capital. Not to mention that capturing a kingdom's capital gives it a high war score and has the ability to arrest members of the ruling court and dynasty of that kingdom. Either way, knowing how to change capital is very important for several reasons.
