Control's modified item missions are generally tricky. They may involve finding the modified item or performing steps to access it, and some may involve a mini-battle at the end in order to clean them up.
Unlike most of its counterparts, the Shum Altered Item mission is not a pursuit quest. This modified item is an arcade machine that you can find in the Active Investigations part of the Investigations sector. He can be found in an office next to a second arcade machine - Shum 2 - and their unusual powers are activated when in close proximity to each other.
If you interact with the Shum arcade machine, you will be transported inside the game cabinet. From there, you can select one of two types of games called Crowd Control and Deadline.
Crowd Control pits you against a number of enemy waves from Hiss. These waves get harder and harder as you level up, but if you've got maximum health, a fully functional service weapon, and maximized powers, it's not too painful. There is a progress bar at the top left of the screen that shows you your progress.
Deadline, on the other hand, is a timed game mode where you have to kill or grab enemies from Hiss to add more seconds to the countdown. If time is of the essence, the game is over. This is a test of speed and skill, so you'll have to keep moving to send the enemies that appear on the map.
To complete the Shum mission, you just need to beat one of these two game modes. Once you do, you will unlock the achievement or the recreation trophy in the workplace, will receive some rewards from items and get access to Shum 2. This game cabinet lets you replay one of Control's main campaign boss battles or its beloved Ashtray Maze mission.
