IPhone 6 review: when Apple needs to adapt to the market

Oh yes ... it also came to us and it got into the wrong hands! This new and "revolutionary" iPhone 6 has passed under my hands as a geek, android-fag and professional denigrator of Apple mobile technology .... and it almost made me change my mind! Almost, I underline it ... Let's see together how this test of a device went that to me is unusual and particular.

Bottle

Box extremely minimal and that doesn't differ much from last year's product for this iPhone. Once the package is opened, we immediately find our smartphone in plain sight resting on a plastic support with a “hole for protruding video cameras”. Removed phone and support we find everything that Apple has always used us to find, a USB wall charger, for an USB / Lightning cable it's a plastic box containing EarPods headphones equipped with microphone and quick controls.

If you missed it, here is our unboxing of the new Apple smartphones.

Design and Ergonomics

Beautiful. Beautiful. Really nice. Extremely beautiful. Nice to use. Nice to handle. Nice to watch. Beautiful.

Seriously really I can't find other words to describe it. Use this iPhone it is comfortable, it is pleasant and the visual impact is also decidedly positive. The sides that become hard and angular soft and rounded they are a pleasure for the hands. The glass following rounding of the body of the smartphone creating a feeling of continuity is incredible e the dimensions of 138.1 x 67 mm guarantee excellent one-handed use.

Smartphone that is extremely thin with his suns 6.9 mm thick and incredibly light at just 129g but this is not always good. In fact, you have the feeling of really having an object in your hand delicate and fragile (no, I have not tried to fold !!!).

The body of the iPhone 6 is completely in satin metal with plastic inserts that probably serve to separate the antennas. The protruding camera is an eyesore and the inconvenience of placing the device on the table is unparalleled. Half a millimeter of thickness less than the well-used device, we would have gladly done without it! Also unwatchable huge upper and lower edges of this iphone that could very well be reduced to a minimum, perhaps not the lower one that contains the classic and inevitable home button but the upper one does.

Hardware

SoC Apple A8 including one CPU Dual-Core da 1,4 GHz ARM v8 it's a GPU Quad-Core PowerVR GX6450 accompanied by 1 GB of RAM. Certainly not the top-of-the-range features we are used to seeing. To tell the truth, even the mid-ranges don't have such low characteristics anymore. But are they really the only numbers on paper that determine whether a smartphone is performing or not? Using this phone I realized that this is not always the case.

This iPhone works fine. Everlasting. And it left me speechless. It is no faster than the competition at opening apps or switching between the various open apps but the fact that it maintains the same speed in everything it does without dropping frames or slowing down is something to be rewarded.

The display is a 4.7 "with a resolution of 1334 × 750 pixels and a consequent pixel density of 326ppi which is not the highest I've ever seen, yet the panel chosen by Apple left me speechless.

Vivid and bright colors but not saturated: indeed, very natural. Incredible brightness and dot-pitch (the black line between two pixels) practically non-existent. I've seen more resolute displays with much more noticeable pixels than the one in question. The size is what I think is best for a smartphone. In this case passed with full marks.

Then we also find all the sensors and classic sockets of all smartphones with the introduction of the as a novelty chip NFC but Apple has blocked for the exclusive use of ApplePay, the payment system made in Cupertino. How not to have it then.

Software

The way I am and how I use smartphones, iOS is by no means a complete system and that I would prefer to the alternatives on the market. But I'm not here either to compare iOS to competitors or to give you a long list of shortcomings that would be useless and boring. All I want to say is that iOS has always been a very good operating system after all. Fluidity with wagons, animations, graphic and functional consistency, all without occupying more system resources than necessary.

It has always been like this, perhaps until now. iOS 8 is the update that adds long-awaited features such as a better sharing menu and custom keyboards. However, it introduces bugs, graphic inconsistencies e problems of "neglect of details" and this had never happened before. So this OS is always a bit more Android from this point of view as well.

You can find my other criticisms in the video, I don't want to be repetitive and repeat the same things risking to bore you too much!

Multimedia

Highly respected multimedia part for iPhone 6. La great display quality, of which I have already spoken abundantly above, allows you to enjoy a visual experience of photos and videos without equal despite the not-so-high resolution we are used to nowadays.

Front camera from 1.2 MP capable of recording video a 720p @ 30fps and that really captures a lot of light allowing us to make video calls and very well defined selfies. 8.0MP rear sensor capable of recording video at most a 1080p @ 60fps (as if it were little) e 720p @ 240fps for slow-motion functionality. Photos that are good in almost all lighting conditions except in the dark with distant subjects as the flash is not really powerful but it is sufficient.

Good quality audio part but nothing more. The sound from the speaker is quite flat even if the volume is still sufficient not to miss even a notification.

But this iPhone gives the best in the gaming part. There is little to say, Compared to the Android store, Apple's has only high-quality applications. No low-quality clones or foot-designed applications are found. Everything is beautiful and everything involves, in the first days I was tempted to download the whole store but I didn't have enough money and space. The games all run without jerks or jamming thanks to the great optimization of the OS.

Autonomy

Battery that I would dare to call from "other times". Only 1810 mAh they cannot be heard. All in order not to make a smartphone often that extra millimeter, a choice that I absolutely do not agree with.

However, it must be said that the smartphone has never left us in trouble during the most stressful days and therefore we cannot complain. With use of 5h / 5h30m (the iPhone measures the minutes of activity not the screen on, this includes listening to music with the screen off and activities that keep the smartphone "active") I arrived in the evening with 5% of battery still available. Think what it could have done with a 3000 mAh battery ...

Value for money

We know very well that Apple is not very famous as a company of cheap products. I don't want to go too far in saying that like all products of the bitten apple this iPhone is definitely overpriced but not as much as you may think.

The right price for this device in my opinion could settle around € 400-450 and it would be a perfect relationship between quality of materials, performance and price. I have not yet seen a phone on the market that is honestly worth the amount written on the tag of this device.

Conclusions

This iPhone 6 convinces, but up to a point. I really liked the aesthetics and the dimensions are what I think are perfect for a smartphone. Small hardware defects (protruding camera) and software (bugs and graphic glitches) that I did not expect from an iPhone famous for the attention to detail that has always distinguished Apple.

The limitations compared to the Android world are many but they are the same as we are used to knowing, as use is still intuitive and pleasant.

It is not worth the price at which they sell it but we know that Apple prices are due to fashion and brand rather than the actual value of the devices. I recommend the purchase to those who do not have too many pretensions but want something that just works with no expense spared.
