Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review

We tested the new one Samsung Galaxy S20 FEthe Fan Edition of the top of the range of the Korean company. Samsung announced this smartphone at a dedicated conference much lower priced compared to the "older brothers". But it has kept the two most important characteristics: the excellent processor and the screen with refresh rate a 120 Hz.

The result is a smartphone that lacks something too much to be in the same category as the Galaxy S20. But that has a truly exceptional value for money.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review: design and screen

Opening the box of our Samsung Galaxy S20 FE we did not have the impression of a top of the range. The squared corners and the camera rise are reminiscent of those of the other S20s. The back of the device though replaces glass with plastic. The device we tested is in Cloud Navy color, which we liked. But the elegance of the big brothers in glass is simply not there.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review. All that you need?By accessing the screen of the device, however, the impression changes. There isn't the Infinity-O with the curved corners that Samsung puts on its more expensive devices, instead we find a Gorilla Glass 3 flat. The front camera is a small hole in the top corner of the device, it does not detract from the quality of the images on the screen. Resolution is good: FHD + 2.400 x 1.080 on 6,5 inches (407 ppi). The refresh rate, on the other hand, is nothing short of impressive. THE 120 Hz refresh rate they look nice in everyday use but look great in games. We had to check that they hadn't updated any of the games we tried, because the impression is of a generational leap.

The only real problem with this screen is the device name: calling itself the Galaxy S20 FE leads to comparison with the big brothers, which are among the few devices to have a better display. But don't be fooled: in this price range, 120 Hz is exceptional.

Top-of-the-range power and speed

In addition to the exceptional refresh rate of the screen, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE also inherits the processor from the top of the range. The model with the 4G has a Samsung Exynos 990, the one with the 5G has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. In both cases we have the best the market has to offer. To accompany the excellent processor are 6 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 GB internal memory (UFS 3.0, supports microSD up to 1TB).

We have tested the model with 5G. The Snapdragon 865 has proven capable of opening and running any application and every game we have tried. Coupled with the 120 Hz refresh rate screen, the effect is that of one really snappy smartphone, which runs faster than our eyes. The halving of RAM compared to the other S20s needn't worry you: To slow down the device we had to open 4 or 5 games and quickly switch between them. We don't think he can understand you often.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review. All that you need? The battery from 4.500 mAh lasts a couple of days with medium use. Even in the testing phase in which we played often and watched streaming videos, we were unable to run out of battery before evening. The smartphone supports the top up at 25W but in the box you will find a 15W adapter: a full charge takes just under two hours. 15W wireless charging works very well.

Camera at the height

The rear camera has three sensors. One main from 12 MP Dual-Pixel with f / 1.8, a Ultra-Wide da 12 MP and f / 2.2 is a goal telephoto to 8 MP and f / 2.4 (with 3x optical and 30x digital zoom). A triple sensor also comes on less expensive devices. However, Samsung has done a good job with the Galaxy S20 FE. The colors are well balanced, the focus is great and responsive. The result is brilliant shots when the lighting conditions are optimal. After dark the photographs are still of a good standard at normal settings. There night mode in our opinion it tends a bit too yellow, producing less realistic shots.

The optical zoom is really effective, while the hybrid one does its duty only up to 10x: exceeding that threshold, the outlines of the images are jagged and the shots inaccurate. THE video in 4K e 60 fps they are well made, even for those like us who do not have a particularly steady hand. Both photos and videos are competent, the camera software is simple to use for those who are not particularly knowledgeable. If you are looking for a smartphone with exceptional shots, however, you have to look elsewhere (and spend a lot more).

La front camera from 32 MP makes good shots, albeit not particularly bright. Portrait mode recognizes the subject well, creating interesting bokeh effects. More than enough for selfies and video calls.

    Everyday use

In addition to testing the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE as much as possible, we spent some time simply using it as a smartphone. We liked the connectivity: both with Wi-Fi and 4G (unfortunately we can't test 5G yet) FE is fast and snappy, the signal does not drop. It handles calls and video calls very well, losing very little charge if under Wi-Fi. The microphones are excellent: our interlocutors reported hearing our voice very naturally. We liked the management of Bluetooth, also thanks to the "Smart device”At Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review. All that you need? The main problem we have had with the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE are i biometric sensors. Facial recognition works well, while not blazing fast. However, with the mask or in the dark it does not work, so you have to use the fingerprint reader under the screen. That didn't recognize our fingers too many times. The sensor is optical and not ultra sonic. With wet fingers after a run or after washing our hands we always had to try more than once. Better than many devices in this price range. But it is a mistake a Galaxy S20 shouldn't make.

Il audio sector is quite powerful to enjoy streaming videos and listen to a podcast, although for music it is better to have good headphones. Bluetooth, why the jack input is missing.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: buy it or not?

The Fan Edition of the Samsung smartphone has some features that we really liked. The screen is flat, but it is very good. The 120 Hz refresh rate is exceptional, returning to review smartphones with a more classic display will be difficult. The performance is excellent, the battery excellent. The camera on the other hand is only average ei biometric sensors have not convinced us. The result is a solid but not stunning smartphone. For fans of Samsung smartphones it is more better Galaxy A than a budget S20.

The purchase is definitely recommended, although in this price range (around 550 euros for 4G and 750 euros for 5G, depending on where you buy them) there are several really interesting rivals. Once bought, however, you will not be disappointed: Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has everything you need. And a little more.
