Xiaomi Mi A2 review, the best buy with Android One

Xiaomi Mi A2 it was presented in Madrid on July 24th and no, it didn't surprise me particularly. The new Chinese device in fact follows Xiaomi Mi X6 quite faithfully, but with a substantial difference: Android One. How does it behave in everyday life? I'll tell you in this one review.

Simple and minimal but with some flaws

Aesthetically, Xiaomi Mi A2 is rather traditional. We have one aluminum body rather robust, rounded edges that facilitate grip without making the device slippery and the traditional on / off and volume balance buttons on the right side. The lower side houses the mono speaker and the USB Type-C connector, while on the back we find the main camera module and the fingerprint reader.

To accompany all this we find 3 defects. The first is the absence of the always beloved 3,5mm jack, replaced by a USB Type-C adapter that you will find inside the package; the second and third instead concern the protrusion of the camera and the shallow depth of the fingerprint reader, two small inlets that are actually compensated quite well by the silicone cover that you find inside the package.

And the ? Almost flawless. Its 5,99 inches, combined with the 18: 9 format, they allow you to have a very large surface, useful for both work and entertainment. Good brightness, good colors and discreet display ambient, which shows notifications even when the device is locked.

Through thick and thin

Do not misunderstand me: Xiaomi Mi A2 performs great. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, flanked by 4 or 6 GB of RAM, allows it to easily handle any workload, including fierce gaming sessions. However, the smartphone loses a few points when it comes to battery and internal memory. The 3010 mAh allow you to get to the end of the day, but I wouldn't have minded a few more mAhs. The speech also applies to the storage space: the version we tested is the 32 GB one, few if we consider the impossibility of expanding the memory. My advice is to at least aim for the 64 / 4GB version; then if you want to exaggerate I remind you that there is also the 128 / 6GB size, so you don't have to worry about running out of space.

On the other hand, the connectivity of this device is really good, which, in these days of total absence of the home connection, has been transformed more than once into a comfortable and powerful modem. Absolutely promoted the Type-C connector and Bluetooth 5.0, while NFC is totally absent.

Finally, we come to the operating system. As I mentioned at the beginning, Xiaomi Mi A2 is an Android One device, which means that you will find on board the stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo. In short, no customizations, except for some pre-installed applications.

And the camera?

Xiaomi has chosen to focus on the double sensor for two main reasons: the beloved portraits and photos in low light conditions. This means that the 12 megapixel sensor is flanked by the 20 megapixel one when you are in the dark so as to guarantee you shots a little more satisfying at night. Nothing to say about the photographs taken during the day: Xiaomi Mi A2 in fact behaves excellently, managing to make the most of HDR too.

Selfies are also good, which use the 20 megapixel front camera to give you pretty detailed shots in almost any situation. Sure, those in the dark will have some noise, but I remind you that we are talking about a mid-range phone.

Finally, we come to the videos. Available in this case you have both Full HD and 4K, both flanked by a rather wide dynamic range. But pay attention to the stabilization: to use the electronic one - the only one present on Xiaomi Mi A2 - you will have to record at 1080p.
