Disintegration's campaign, like the story modes of other games, contains missions that have a major objective to accomplish. You can, however, accept additional challenges for each story level if you want to make things even more interesting during your game.

How can I accept the optional challenges of the story in the disintegration?
Disintegrate doesn't just push you from mission to mission in its campaign mode. Instead, you have downtime between them in its hub area. You can upgrade your abilities or chat with your comrades during this time, and it's here that you can also take on additional challenges before the next mission.
To do this, head to the Sentry Droids around the hub area. Press the A button on Xbox One, the cross button on PlayStation 4, or the V key on PC to interact with them. They will tell you what the challenge is and you can decide whether or not to accept it.
You can unlock up to three challenges per mission. Sometimes, though, you'll only see one or two Sentinel Droids dotted around. The other challenges can come from your teammates in these cases, so be sure to chat with them before you go.
Each side mission you complete earns you an upgrade chip, which you can use to improve your crew's stats. So it's worth completing if you want to improve your team's capabilities.
