Normal mode can be used to recover files that have been recently deleted and when the hard drive is not damaged. Extensive mode, on the other hand, is useful for recovering files that have been deleted in the past, when a disk has become corrupt and when a disk has been formatted.
Microsoft has published a table to better explain in which situation it is necessary to use one mode over the other:
