Character ascension in Genshin Impact is limited by Adventure Rank and requires explicit higher level materials.
Let's start with the first obstacle that you will have to overcome in Genshin Impact before building a character: Adventure Rank. Characters will be capped at level 20 until you reach Adventure rank 15, so let's break down what we know:
- Adventure Rank 15 - Ascension of the character to level 1.
- The level cap is increased to 40.
- Adventure Rank 25 - Ascension of the character to level 2.
- The maximum level is increased to 50.
- Adventure Rank 30 - Ascension of the character to level 3.
- The maximum level is increased to 60.
- Adventure Rank 35 - Ascension of the character to level 4.
- The level cap is increased to 70.
- Adventure Rank 40 - Ascension of the character to level 5.
- The level cap is increased to 80.
- Adventure Rank 45 - Ascension of the character to level 6.
- The level cap is increased to 90.
You can determine a character's level by the stars under their name. No star is level 0 (base level limit of 20), and so on. Character Ascension doesn't just increase a character's base stats and increase their level cap; It also unlocks the ability to upgrade combat talents to certain levels (passive talents will automatically level up when their associated Ascension level is reached).
Character Ascension in Genshin Impact requires materials found from bosses around the world, although initial materials for level 1 can be found both in souvenir shops and from normal bosses. Level 2 and above will require materials dropped by the various “Elite” bosses around the world, and you will need 40 Original Resins to claim the rewards per boss (you can fight bosses without resin).
If there is any good news, Base Crystals can easily be farmed from normal bosses and can be "crafted" into higher level versions through Alchemy. You will need to have the same Adventure Rank as the Character Ascension Level you are trying to unlock to craft the required Upgraded Crystals, but you won't have to burn Resin while grabbing Crystals if you don't mind . Elite materials though. . . yeah, resin.
One final note about character ascension materials in Genshin Impact: They will always match the character element (apart from the main character, who gets their materials from Adventure Ranks and Story Quests). So if you are trying to assemble a Geo character, you will be focusing on the Geo bosses. This means you can focus on your grind. You can also click an item on the Mount tab in the Character menu to locate explicit drop-off / shop locations. There are also some basic Ascension-related items (like harvestable plants), but these won't be a problem for growing. Focus on the crystals and boss items - they will be your biggest obstacle to the character's rise.
