Google tries again in the social and communications sector! This time try it with Google Duo, a free video calling app presented as Apple's “FaceTime killer” and ready to compete with proven apps like Skype in free video communications. Let's find out some of its features and if it really has what it takes to beat the competition.
Google Duo: features
Google Duo needs a SIM and a phone number, having an SMS authentication system quite similar to that of WhatsApp; goodbye then entering emails and access codes, although Google Duo also integrates with the Google account, the latter is not the only method to connect to the app.
Google Duo accesses the phone book to find other contacts using the same app, showing them on the main screen.
For the rest, the video calls are similar to what is already good seen with Hangouts but with a peculiar feature: video calls are 1-to-1 (hence the name Duo). We will only be able to contact one user, and we will only be able to receive one video call at a time. Another noteworthy feature is the video preview in the response screen (Knock Knock). When we receive a call, the sender's video will start immediately and before answering we will be able to see our interlocutor already in action. This function can of course be disabled or enabled only for some trusted contacts.

Google Duo only allows you to make video calls.
The app does not allow simple calls (it is not possible to turn off the front camera during communication). There is no chat (for this there is Allo) and we cannot make simple VoIP calls. Below we can see the video presentation of Google Duo.
