Baldur's Gate 3 is an upcoming RPG where players take control of a custom character or original character created by developer Larian Studios, to progress on an epic journey through a world overrun by Mindflayers. Baldur's Gate attached, but it is very different from Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. These two relied on Dungeon and Dragon's rules from the second edition. In contrast, the third game will use the Fifth Edition and feature turn-based combat, no lineup choices, and several different game mechanics. With so many unique options and changes, Baldur's Gate 3 connect you to the first two games in any way?
The main story of Baldur's Gate 3 will contain elements from the other two stories, such as notable characters from Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, as well as story elements from these two adventures. Swen Vincke of Larian Studios spoke briefly about this during a Reddit AMA he hosted. Details were brief, but he took a look at what players can expect when playing.
“We really don't want to spoil anything, but we wouldn't call it Baldur's Gate 3 if it wasn't for the connection,” Vincke said. "Let me say we approach the story of BG 1 & 2 in a meaningful way, there are returning characters and what happened in BG 1/2 / tob leads to what happens in BG3 . You won't necessarily see it at the start of the adventure, but you'll understand once you get further into the game. "
We don't have all the details on this on what story elements we can expect to see in the game, with the old characters returning. How they might make a comeback is anyone's guess, and how they tie into the main storyline of Baldur's Gate 3 will be a thrilling discovery. You may be able to see some of these details when the game releases for Early Access, which will happen before its official release. The early access gameplay won't give us all the details of the story, and we won't be able to see or play like everything, but it will give you a good idea of what to expect from the rest of the game.
Larian wants to be as silent as possible about these details of the story. The connections to Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are probably extremely important to the overall plot of Baldur's Gate 3, so it's likely that none of these details should see the light of day anytime soon. Larian Studios is happy to share gameplay elements, footage, and how a player's actions affect the entire world around them and the rest of the party.
Baldur's Gate 3 is out sometime in late 2020 or early 2021 for PC and Google Stadia. We can expect Early Access to release before that, possibly sometime in the summer of 2020.
