How does cross-platform progression work in Rocket League?

Rocket League is undergoing a series of changes after it was acquired by Epic Games last year. Shortly after the acquisition, the game ditched loot boxes for blueprints, and just a few months ago it was announced that the game would go free later this summer. Right before the game goes free, the developers are adding cross-platform progression to Rocket League.

Cross-platform progression will essentially unify progression across all platforms. So all of your DLC, progression, levels and everything else will be the same no matter what platform you are playing on. Players can connect any platform to the Epic Games Store, but they will need to choose their primary platform there. Ideally, this should be the account with the highest progression. Once the main account is chosen, the data will be replicated on all platforms.

While this may be a welcome move, it should be noted that this does not mean that platform exclusive content will move across all platforms. In addition, trading will be limited to the platform, so PS4 players will only be able to trade with PS4 players and the same for other platforms. This is done to prevent fraud.

Rocket League is still a niche title for esports and the decision to make the game free can turn out to be a big thing for the game. With the changes the game has in the track record and support from Epic Games, it should perform well in the near future.
