How to beat all Hartman encounters in Control AWE

Hartman is the main villain of Control's AWE expansion. The former psychiatrist, who fans of Alan Wake will recognize in the 2010 Remedy game, is a warped beast thanks to his encounters with the Dark Place and the Hiss. Shaded Hartman is the reason the Investigation Sector was shut down years ago, and it's up to you, as Jesse, to kill him once and for all.

You'll meet Hartman six times, and the final encounter leads to a boss fight. Learning how to hunt Hartman, and then defeat him, can be difficult if you don't know what to do. Allow us to step in and give you advice for each meeting.

Your first meeting comes after Hartman stops you from leaving in an elevator. As he is a product of the Dark Place, he hates the light. After opening the elevator door, get out of its way and grab the nearby power core. Run it into the power module to your right to activate the lights.

Look to your right if you are facing the module. There is a stack of power cores that need to be tossed into modules scattered around the room. These modules are located in dark areas and Hartman can injure you if you stay in the dark for too long. Your powers - aside from dash and levitate - don't work here either.

Take a core and use your abilities to throw it into another module on a walkway to your left. This lights up another area and you have to repeat this process two more times. Take your time, use the lighted areas for protection, and go as far as you can to get in and out of dark areas. Once each module has a core, press the button nearby to turn on the lights and scare Hartman.

There are two meetings in this region. The first is in a closed area, and some of the lights go out after a few seconds. Follow the lighted path to avoid Hartman and, if a light goes out when you reach it, return to the previous one. Wait for it to light up again, then walk through it to the next permanently lit area.

You'll eventually reach an area with a breakable wall and a power core nearby. Use your Push ability to break the wall and launch the core into the module. Press the button nearby to light up the entire area and force Hartman to retreat.

For the second encounter there are three platforms with control panels. You have to use each console to move a light connected to a track around the room, which acts as a cover when you grab the power cores. There are obstacles in the way when you follow the light, so use the dash and levitate to avoid them.

Use the light to grab the first core and throw it into the module on the other side of the room. This turns on two of the control panels and reveals two more modules. Using the light and your abilities, take the second core and run it in one of these mods. Take the previous core and throw it into the second while avoiding the lurking Hartman. Race to the elevator, take it to the desk above you, and press the button to turn on the lights.

For this encounter, you need to move the modified train item to turn on the lights. Dash towards the lighted area on the left and press the button to activate the cart, which is hanging above you. Dart to your right towards the console on a raised platform. Beat the whistle that appears and press the button to restart the train.

Dash left towards the mobile lab, kill the whistle and press the button for the last time. Race to the elevator at the end of the room, take it up to the desk above, and press one last button to turn on the lights.

This is where things get complicated. There is a desk in front of you with four basic power modules. There are four towers scattered around the room and you need to insert their hearts into these modules.

Hartman spawns Hiss soldiers to fight you, as well as Hiss groups to prevent you from gaining access. Kill the Hiss and shoot the clusters that surround the tower. Take the core and go for the office. Launch it in a module. Repeat these steps three more times.

Know that removing the heart from a tower turns off its lights. This increases the darkness in the room, which means Hartman can attack you from a greater distance with each core you catch. If it gets too close and lines up one, drop the core and walk away. You can get it back before it lines up another attack. Flip the switch once the four cores are in place to scare him.

This is the last encounter before the boss battle. Before descending, call for reinforcements from the Rangers on the intercom in the room to your right. It will help you for later, trust us.

The entire room is dark except for a platform on your left. There are three modules scattered around the room that need cores to power their lights. Dash and sneak around Hartman to grab the cores and throw them into the modules. Once all three are in place, flip the switch on the main platform to activate the lights.

How to complete the battle against Boss Hartman

With your Ranger partner in the trailer, start throwing things and firing your service weapon at Hartman for damage. Pierce and Charge are your best weapon choices because they do the most damage.

If you're on foot, watch out for Hartman teleporting towards you. He will either crush you with one of his arms or grab you and drain your health. If his attack is the last, use the joystick or mouse on your controller to break free. If you are levitating or far away, it will use projectiles to attack you. These can really hurt, so be sure to rush if you see him lining up a long range attack.

Repeat these steps until he is almost dead. At the last minute, Hartman will pound the ground and pop the cores out of their locations and spawn hiss as a backup. Retreat to a
