How to change the difficulty setting in The Outer World

The Outer Worlds is a great open-world exploration game, with nice RPG elements and great dialogue. It's also a first person shooter, or a first person melee game, depending on how you fight. As such, there are plenty of opportunities for death in the game. If you decide it's a little too hard or too easy, you can change the difficulty setting as you play.

How to change the difficulty setting in the Outer Worlds

When you first start playing The Outer Worlds, you select the difficulty setting when creating your character. You will be able to choose from the options below. They can all be changed at any time, with the exception of the Supernova difficulty. Only complete phases of play can be performed on Supernova. You have to choose it at the start of the game and you won't be able to change it later.

  • Story - for people who are more interested in talking than fighting
  • Normal - exactly what you think, the way the game should be played
  • Hard - enemies take more damage and are more powerful
  • Supernova - Introduces survival elements, companions can die and enemies hit like trucks

To change the difficulty (except for Supernova phases), follow the steps below at any time:

  • Access the main menu by pressing Esc on PC, Options on PS4, or Menu on Xbox One.
  • Go to settings
  • Go to the game
  • The first option on this tab will allow you to change the difficulty

Remember that you can change the difficulty as often as you like, at any time. Therefore, if you are having a conflict that is causing you all kinds of headaches, you can make the game a little bit easier to help you get over it. Return to your old difficulty level.
