Baits can only be eaten if they are coiled with a grip on the hook. There is also a chance with a specific bait that it will not be consumed when coiled with a catch. Any bait with a bait power greater than 5% will require multiple catches to be consumed. If you have various forms of bait, the one placed at the top left of your inventory will be used first. They can also be placed in ammo bags, but will be used last after the bait remains in your inventory slots.

The most common form of bait is critters. This includes insects, snails, and worms (but not the truffle worm), and all must be captured with the bug net or golden bug net. There are currently 42 different types of creatures in total, but only the 23 variants of Insects, Snails, and Worms can be used as bait. You can catch them in specific environments at specific times of the day that allow them to reproduce naturally. The list of critters used for bait (along with their bait power) is below.

Blue, green and pink jellyfish are distinct from enemy jellyfish and can only be caught by fishing. Blue jellyfish can only be caught in underground or cavernous bodies of water. Green jellyfish are in the same areas as blue but are only available in Hardcore. When Hardcore is active there is a 50% chance when capturing a jellyfish in these areas whether it is blue or green. Pink jellyfish can be captured in ocean biomes. All three have 20 percent bait power. The chance of catching a jellyfish bait is 1 in 500 with 50% fishing power and 1 in 250 with 100% fishing power.

Finally, the apprentice, the companion and the master bait are rewards for completing the quests of the NPC fisherman. You can also find them by fishing and grabbing a crate. The Bat Apprentice has 15% Power, the Mate 30%, and the Master Bait has 50% Bait Power.
