Good news for owners of the "Fat" model of PlayStation 3, at least for those in the US. They will have the right to request a refund of $ 65 from Sony, joining the class action that arose as a result of the case OtherOS, which saw the removal of the infamous support a Linux from the PS3 software.
The OtherOS case and the victory of PS3 users
When PlayStation 3 was presented in the now distant 2005, Sony had included among the innovative features of the black monolith the support for Linux distros, which would have allowed users to use the console as a common PC. The Japanese giant's plan did not go properly, primarily due to (alleged) security problems, which would have forced the company to "silently" remove this feature in 2010, via a PS3 firmware update.
This is how the case arises OtherOS. The sad removal of Linux support was not very well received by some users, who decided to get together to take Sony to court. Thus, after five years from the first defeat (2011), in 2016 the plaintiffs finally got the better, obtaining a plea deal worth 3.75 million dollars with which Sony undertakes to reimburse the owners of the PS3 Fat model.
Today users still have one month to request the $ 65 refund, but these will have to meet some basic requirements. First of all, you must be a resident of the United States and have purchased one PS3 between 1 November 2006 and 1 April 2010 at an authorized point of sale. The user who makes the request must legally swear to be aware of OtherOS, provide the serial key of your console and your PlayStation Network ID. The application expires on April 15, 2018.
The "Fat" models of PlayStation 3 which fall into this case are those of 20, 40, 60 and 80GB; The Slim and Super Slim models distributed in the most recent period are therefore excluded.
