Pokémon GO Groudon Raid Guide - Best Counters (January 2021)

The best Groudon counters

Let's start by helping you put together the perfect team of powerful Groudon counters. Of course, while most players have access to standard Pokémon, there are better choices even beyond the regular roster. So while the graphic below is filled with common counter options, we also want to explain some of the more sensible choices.

If you have enough Mega Energy and really want to beat Groudon, Mega Venusaur with Vine Whip and Frenzy Plant is your best bet, with Mega Blastoise with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon in second.

Additionally, if you've removed Frustration from your Shadow Pokémon, try some of the following: Shadow Gyarados with Waterfall and Hydro Pump, Shadow Swampert with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon, Shadow Mewtwo with Confusion and Ice Beam, or Shadow Venusaur with Vine Whip and Frenzy Plant. If you don't have them, the following are all great Groudon counters.

Once you have your Groudon meters ready, you can read on for all of your other questions.

Pokémon GO Groudon Raid Guide

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Groudon raids in Pokémon GO in January 2021.

When do the Groudon raids start and end in January 2021?

The Groudon (and Kyogre) raids will begin on Tuesday, January 19 at 10 a.m. and end a week later on Tuesday, January 26 at 10 a.m. as well. All times are local, so just check your clock to see if they have started to appear.

How many players are needed

Without an increase in the weather for CP or Groudon's moveset, a strong team of two coaches with high-level and powerful counters can win the battle. However, most players are not at this stage, so we recommend at least four players before trying the raid. And if some of them are below level 35 or the weather is against you, you will probably need more.

What climate stimulates

The SunnyClear weather will be the strangest battle against Groudon as it will boost his CP and Fire type attacks but also give help to your Grass type counters. Rain or snow is good for you, increasing your Water and Ice type counters respectively. And if it's Windy, just watch out for a Groudon with Dragon-type attacks as they'll be boosted against you.

Which CP for 100% IVs

Groudon will have a CP range of 2260-2351 CP in any weather other than Sunny. If you spot a 2351 CP Groudon be sure to put all your effort into catching it as it has 100% perfect IVs. If the weather is sunny, this range drops to 2825-2939 CP instead.

How to get Shiny Groudon

Shiny Groudon will be available for this new visit from January 2021, but there doesn't appear to be an increase in the standard Brilliant Rating. One in twenty is the usual metric, so that should apply here as well. Raiding twenty will not guarantee a brilliant Groudon, but it will give you a good chance of achieving it. The more you do, the better the chances, so try to do as much as you can while they're there.
