Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: New York seen with irony - Why watch it?

Not too long ago in this column we talked about 30 Rock, one of the most important contributions to television by Tina Fey. After the success of that show, however, this actress and author certainly did not remain idle. And so, a few years later a new project made its debut, which went through a troubled development and landed on Netflix in 2015. We are talking about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and these are the reasons why you should look at it.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, what is this TV series about?

Everything starts from a news case tragic but with a happy ending. Four women in Indiana have for years been locked up in an underground bunker by a mysterious Reverend, who kidnapped them and promised them rescue from a hypothetical end of the world. Among these there is also ours Kimmy, who entered her prison as a teenager and is now an adult, at least on paper.

Experience has certainly marked it, but did not break his spirit. The protagonist of this show is lively, witty and full of positivity towards her life, which she is ready to rewrite. And what better place to start over than the Big Apple? Here we find her grappling with a series of bizarre figures, by the rich Jacqueline Voorhees to the crazy landlady Lillian, up to the eccentric roommate Titus Andromedon. It is by their side that Kimmy will have to rewrite her own story, passing through work, love and study, traveling to the less glossy side of New York City.

Yes, because if 30 Rock took us directly to the star system televisivo stars and stripes, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt allows us to explore the darker side of the Big Apple. Dilapidated apartments, difficulties in putting together a meal, pitfalls around every corner, in perfect contrast to the absurd glitz of the wealthy of the city. All this, however, does not sadden, because we see it through the eyes of the always cheerful Kimmy.

In fact, this woman is endowed with a spirit exceptionally naive. His ingenuity constitutes a sort of colored filter that is always in front of his eyes and consequently those of the viewer. There is no difficult event that manages to knock it down and therefore cannot overcome. After all, the title itself says it: our Kimmy Schmidt absolutely is Unbreakable.

The quality we know in a new context

If you are a regular reader of Why watch it? you will have already learned to appreciate 30 Rock, the Tina Fey show we were talking about at the beginning. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt doesn't fall very far from that plant, featuring her own pungent comedy and above all effective.

The different adventures of the young protagonist are totally hilarious, traveling on the fine line between the absurd and the all too concrete. Perhaps the most famous Tina Fey show is still at an unattainable level of quality, but our Kimmy defends herself absolutely well. And the same can be said of his supporting actors, of the highest level and able to easily manage the project independently.

Each of the main members of Kimmy's 'New York family' is a complex character, layered, with light and dark sides also seen through the protagonist's colored lenses. Beyond their comic impact (which we assure you is not indifferent) they are all gifted with a rather refined story arc, which goes hand in hand with the main heroine.

In this way, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt also manages to cope not simple arguments, especially with a comic tone. In the different seasons, all available on Netflix, the show plays with racism, discrimination, invasion of privacy linked to the web, toxic machismo, disparity between social classes, even religious fundamentalism and gentrification.
