When players want to attract Pokémon to their location in Pokémon Go, they use their incense. It's a great item that attracts any local Pokémon to its position without having to move. Sometimes when players go to their bag to use the item, it will appear orange instead of the traditional green. Many wonder if this is a new item, or if something is wrong with their game, but both thoughts are not true. The incense remains the same. The change in color means the item will attract specific Pokémon, not all of the local spawn that can pass.
The change from green to orange on the incense item means that you can expect a specific variety of Pokémon to spawn when you activate it. The exchange usually occurs around a particular event, which you can investigate by visiting the Today tab. You can do this by clicking on the field research binoculars in the lower right part of your screen, then swiping to the left. You should be able to see the sections labeled the name of the event and what exclusive bonuses are available. For example, during a Gastly Community Day event on July 20, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m., Gastly had increased the number of appearances around the world. If you had to activate your incense, it would have been orange, and most of all you attracted Gastly to your house.
Anytime you see an orange incense available in your bag, it doesn't hurt to switch to your Today tab to see what's going on. This is a great way to make sure you receive the Pokémon of your choice or special Pokémon that are available for a limited time. Additionally, if you are looking for that many Pokémon at an event, throwing in an Incense increases your chances of catching one with phenomenal stats and having enough candy to power it up.
