How to get the last laugh in Destiny 2

How to get the last laugh in Destiny 2

The last word has come back to us in Destiny 2. For people who have never played Destiny, The Last Word is one of the most remarkable exotics in the game. Evoking a serious gunslinger style, The Last Word is a hard-hitting, rapid-firing exotic hand cannon that can be fully fired automatically until your enemies are pulped.

The story behind The last word is long and complicated, but a hunter called Jaren Ward owned it. Ward would fall on Dredgen Yore in battle, and the Exotic Hand Cannon would end up in the hands of Shin Malphur, who would go on to kill Yore.

Important: I've excluded parts that require you to return to the Drifter. You will need to do this between most of the quest steps.

How to get the last word

The first thing you will need to do is visit the Drifter. He found something unusual and wants you to do whatever it takes to make it work again.

Step 1 - Cleaning

The first stage consists of three parts. You'll have to

  • Defeated the Hive with Solar Damage
  • Collect beehive tablets
  • Defeat the Hive Bosses

This is a fairly straightforward step. I tried killing the beehive bosses in Lost Sectors, but it didn't seem to register. After that I just went through the witch ritual public event and finished it really quickly. Because these events have a lot of hive enemies, equip some weapons with solar damage, and it will be done in no time. It's always worth going to Mars to see if people are using an escalation protocol. Going through one at the right time will give you all of the stage requirements within minutes.

Step 2 - The temptation

After completing the first step, return to the Drifter and he will give you the second part of the quest. The challenge now is to kill the Guardians of the Crucible, to nourish the artifact with their Light. No weapon type or damage is specified here, so grab your favorite Crucible weapons and join your favorite playlist.

You will have to play with caution, you will progress with each death, but you will lose progress with each death. Not the most enjoyable quest step for many PvE players in Destiny 2, Unfortunately! Right now the math appears to be 3% progress for a kill, 1% progress for an assist, and -2% progress for a death. Get 100%, and this step is done.

Step 3 - Damnation

This step takes the form of a mission to Titan. It only needs 500 power levels to complete, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem for people. It culminates in a boss fight; you have to shoot the wizards to lower the shields of the boss.

Step 4 - Tainted Light

This is another multi-part step! For this portion you will need

  • Earn 50 Tokens with Precision Hive Kills
  • Complete 3 Heroic Witch Ritual Events
  • Kill 15 Escapees from the Lost Sector
  • Earn 25 Blood for Blood or Best Served Cold Medals.

For the last part, you need to return to the Crucible for some additional PvP action. If you want to be really sneaky about this, I would suggest a handgun and melee attack that damages over time. Rush someone, and chip their shield with the handgun, then melee. Let them kill you, then the damage over time should finish them off and get you the medal you need.

If Mayhem is active (and it's this week!), Then this is a good playlist to try to do that. With so many kills stealing, the shortened time to respawn, and the ability to spam supers and abilities, this makes this a great place to get the medals.

Step 5 - The Conversation

The next step is a mission to the Tangled Shore. Again, it needs 500 power levels, so if you've made it that far, you're good to go. During this mission, you will receive the last word.

It seems people have reported issues with this mission. It appears to be due to an interaction with the Three Wizards from too far away. To avoid this bug, approach assistants before starting to shoot them. After the wizarding fight, you will meet Enkaar and a new mechanic! Stand on the plate to activate the "Steady" effect, then take the last word. Enkaar will raise his gun and you will have to shoot him in the hand.

Eliminate all the enemies that will appear, to activate the next plate. This time, two copies of Enkaar will appear. You will need to remember the order in which the Enkaars appeared and shoot them in the same order. Clear more ads, then move on to the final plaque. Three copies of Enkaar will appear and you will need to re-film them in order of appearance. Once you have completed this part, the mission is complete. Enjoy your new exotic hand cannon.
