Super Mario Party: Let the Fun Begin | Review

It was only a matter of time before a game from the Mario Party series went on to add to the hefty stock of Nintendo SwitchSuper Mario Party is a video game capable of bringing families and groups of friends together in front of the same console and television with the sole purpose of entertaining.

After our test in this preview, we have now got our hands on the full version of the title which, while maintaining a classic game formula, has been able to amaze us with the many new ways to use Nintendo's flagship console.

Welcome to Piazza Party

The most iconic characters of the Super Mario series want to find out who deserves the title of Superstar but, failing to agree, they start a competition to determine who could be the holder, all supervised by the judges Toad, Toadette and Kamek.

Once the three judges finish their preparations, they will welcome you to the Party Square, nothing less than theGame hub. In the square you can choose the game mode or simply check the collectibles obtained during your hours of fun.

This last chapter is designed to always challenge 4 players at the same time, so even if you are alone the missing places will be replaced by the CPU, with the possibility of selecting the level of difficulty. The ways to play have multiplied, between old and new modes we have: Mario Party, Stage of the Rhythm e Wild Waters.

With Mario Party you will face a turn-based adventure, similar to the game of the goose. You can decide the number of rounds and whether to play all against all or in teams. Once the board has been chosen, each with its particularities, the die must be rolled to decide the starting order. Apart from the initial roll, each character will have his own special die, which will have very different faces, which can also exceed the maximum of 6 or have unique bonuses (such as gain or loss of coins).

As you advance you will end up on different boxes that could make you lose or get coins depending on the color, or activate the special features of each map. At the end of each round, a minigame will start, always different and with variations also depending on whether you play all against all or teams. The winner of this will receive gold coins as a reward.

Once you have accumulated a large sum you can buy items with which you can upgrade yourself, penalize your opponents or get stars. The stars are the key to victory and can be purchased from Toadette, which will be positioned randomly on the board every time you buy one (or for other factors).

Whoever collects the most could win the victory, as during the final scoring Toad will assign different stars to the various players based on the objectives completed, revealed at the end of the game. Compared to the past, Toad will only award 2 stars by taking random parameters, such as more coins collected, more covered squares, more minigames won, etc. This mode represents the heart of Super Mario Party and we are sure it will give rise to intense challenges with your friends (which could end in friendships destroyed as tradition of the title).

In box to the rhythm you will have to leave the comfort of the sofa to let loose on the track. In this frenetic game mode, useful for burning calories, you will have to keep pace with the music by moving the Joy-Con correctly in order to score more points: the better you follow the rhythm, the greater the points obtained.

Finally, the modality that we most appreciated among those offered, Wild Waters, where the watchword is team play. All four players will have to put aside the hatred previously accumulated and coordinate to move the canoe.

The team will have to waste as little time as possible, avoiding obstacles and choosing which direction to take when the river splits to reach its terminus, all using the Joy-Con as oars to navigate. In your path you will find balloons that, once popped, will start a cooperative minigame that could give you extra seconds depending on the time it takes to complete it.

In Party Square there is also the room of minigames, in which you will face various challenges in quick succession with the possibility of being able to play them individually. There will be then Toad's toy room, in which there are 4 special mini-games that will be possible to play together with another owner of Super Mario Party. In this case it will be possible to play by joining the screens in portable mode of two Nintendo Switch, as with the game of tanks also seen in the E3 trailer, where the map of the challenge will change according to the point of union of the two consoles.

Super Mario Party: a game for everyone

The minigames in question are eighty, all new, simple, immediate to learn and can be played exclusively with a single joycon each. Each player will use the functions of the small controllers, such as motion sensors and HD Rumble, 'exploited' (dare we say) now more than ever within the title, since only a handful of games for Switch do it good. use.

The title also has an online part that appears to be very sparse, providing a limited selection of minigames; given the marginality of the component it seems that the developers wanted to focus on an experience in localedespite the nature of the game.

Super Mario Party he does not feel the weight of being the latest in a long series, he has been able to differentiate himself from the previous chapters, bringing a breath of fresh air after many years. Thanks to the features of Nintendo Switch and the great variety of minigames present, party game lovers will not be able to do without this title that will be able to offer fun game sessions for all age groups.
