Huawei Nova 5T review: an enticing déjà vu

Huawei Nova 5T not surprising for its originality. Indeed, once you open the package you will wonder if you are in front of the right smartphone. The latest arrival of the Chinese giant in fact sincredibly similar to Honor 20: similar size, identical display, side fingerprint reader and even the same processor. Huawei Nova 5T has it though an unquestionable advantage: the price.

But before we reveal how much the device costs, let's try to analyze it and understand what it has to offer.

Huawei Nova 5T: technical sheet

As always, let's start with numbers and technical specifications, not only of Nova 5T but also of Honor 20.

Huawei Nova 5T review: practically twins

There is nothing to say about this Huawei Nova 5T that has not already been said in the Honor 20 review. This is because, as you have already seen from the technical data sheets, the two devices are practically twins, both in appearance and in performance.

We are thus faced with a smartphone built in an impeccable way, with a rear glass body, the metal profile and a 6,26 inch display with a small hole on the left, necessary to house the 32 megapixel front camera. The panel is an IPS LCD, it behaves very well even in direct sunlight and can be calibrated by accessing the menu Color and temperature modes.

The profiles of this Nova 20T are also identical to Honor 5, with the right one hosting the fingerprint reader, a solution that we had particularly appreciated also on the twin.

At this point you may be wondering if there is actually any difference between Honor's top of the range and Huawei's new terminal. Yes and no. Shapes, sizes and buttons are in exactly the same place. However, the colors change. On the one hand we have the Midnight Black and the Sapphire Blue of the smartphone released in May, on the other hand we have the new ones Crush Blue, Midsummer Purple e Black on Huawei Nova 5T.

Nothing changes

Don't expect any changes in performance. Here too the two devices are equivalent. Bad? Actually not since we particularly liked the Honor 20: the Kirin 980 and 6 GB of RAM are more than enough to carry out any kind of activity, from navigation to more extreme gaming, while the 128 GB of storage space - unfortunately not expandable - allows you to store files, photos, videos and apps of all kinds.

Complete connectivity, with WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and NFC for digital payments. There is even the infrared port. What is missing instead is the 3,5 mm jack, which is why you will have to get yourself a good pair of Type-C headphones or rely on the aforementioned Bluetooth.

Finally, the battery was promoted, which guarantees you coverage for the whole day, and the operating system, Android 9.0 Pie with the well-known EMUI 9.1 by Huawei. I know, you may be wondering why there is no Android 10, but we will talk about that later.

    Are four rear cameras enough?

The photographic sector is also the one seen on the twin: Huawei Nova 5T therefore presents itself with 4 rear sensors. Many? Undoubtedly, but it is also true that this large group offers you all the versatility you need. The 48 megapixel main camera offers you rather sharp shots and vivid colors, the 16 megapixel wide-angle is perfect for panoramas, while the depth sensor is useful for portraits. There is also a 2 megapixel sensor dedicated to macros which, however, did not particularly surprise us.

There is also l'artificial intelligence that tends to enter a bit with a straight leg, oversaturating the colors.

On the other hand, the front camera as well as the videos are good, which however are penalized by the absence of optical stabilization.

Huawei Nova 5T review: buy it or not?

If you have reached this point of the review it is because you expect an answer to that question that you have probably asked yourself from the very first lines: what sense does it make to bring on the market a clone of Honor 20 which, moreover, is the son of the same parent?

The answer we have given ourselves - and which is not necessarily true - is linked to the current situation of Huawei. We remind you that the company has been blacklisted by the American President, Donald Trump, which is why the latest top of the range, that is Mate 30 Pro, will arrive in stores without the Google Apps.

What does all this have to do with it? Imagine having a high-performance smartphone already certified by Google and wanting to prove to the European markets that you are the giant ever. What do you do? Don't “rebrand” the terminal to bypass the block and tell consumers “Hey! Don't give us up for dead, we still have some tricks up our sleeve “?

Here is explained - at least in our opinion - the extreme similarity with Honor 20 and the lack of Android 10 in a device released after the official launch of the new Big G operating system.

And what changes for the user? Actually nothing. Beyond the considerations related to the current situation of the Asian giant, Huawei Nova 5T remains an undoubtedly interesting and deserving smartphone. A device that aims at young people and that in the Midsummer Purple variant is incredibly attractive. The price is then absolutely competitive: 429 € against the 499 euros of Honor 20. How to tell him no?
