The 'old' desktop programs can become apps for Windows 10

Another phase of the conference, another rumor that finds confirmation: after the (shocking) news that Windows 10 has somehow integrated Ubuntu into itself, on the stage of the BUILD 2016 conference another of the more interesting aspects intended in some way to giving new life to the concept of Universal.

Microsoft has indeed announced the tool Desktop app Converter which, as the name implies, will allow developers to transform the so-called "desktop programs" into Windows 10 apps, distributable via the Windows Store.

The Desktop App Converter - which is part of the Centennial Project - will allow developers to start with a Win32 or .NET program, basically the classic software with an independent installer that we are used to seeing since the first versions of Windows, and with a series of simple operations convert it to the AppX format that can be distributed through the Windows Store.

In other words, not just the developers will be able to take programs designed for older versions of Windows and turn them into apps belonging to the Store, but as a direct consequence these will be able to redeploy and run such apps not only on Windows 10 for desktop / tablet, but also on Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 for Xbox One.

This further reinforces the concept of “Universal”, introducing the potential possibility of run compatible programs (only) with Windows Destkop also on Windows 10 Mobile, giving further meaning to the latest top of the range - the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL - which make Continuum their strong point.

At the moment, Microsoft has stated that it is working with Sage to convert the Sage 200 app back to AppX and include it in the Windows Store, and that the latter will soon be available in that format for Insiders.

If you are a developer or if you want to deepen the discussion further, you just have to go to the official page del Project Centennial.
