Formerly identical except for the design, LG's C and G ranges are drifting this year since the LG G1 is indeed the only one to benefit from the brand new generation of the manufacturer's EVO panel. The "G" stands for "Gallery" and we must admit that the G1 is above all intended to be hung on the wall, with an ultra clean design and successful cable management. It is possible to use these feet, but they are delivered as an option, the wall bracket is however provided.

It remained to be seen what had the new slab in the belly. Its main promise: better brightness, the usual weak point of OLED technology. And the contract is effectively fulfilled with an increase of nearly 15% on this point. However, the heights of Panasonic OLED TVs have not yet been reached. The colors are unsurprisingly almost perfect and we find the usual excellence of LG in terms of gaming.

It remains to be seen if this justifies the 200 euros more than the LG C1. From our perspective, this is the case, especially if you plan to mount your TV to the wall. To know everything about this screen, head to our LG OLED55G1 test.

Unsurprisingly, the LG C range remains at the top of the hierarchy of OLED TVs or not. The changes between the 2021 CX and the C1 released in early 2021 are more than minor. The Korean having reserved its new OLED panels for its G1 range that we will not fail to test in due course.

The design does not change and therefore remains as successful as ever. The panel also remains unchanged and we are therefore entitled to perfectly calibrated colors and perfect blacks. Only the peak of brightness remains simply "correct". Gamers will once again be delighted, with a very responsive screen accompanied by HDMI 2.1 compatibility as well as G-Sync support for PC gamers. A new menu dedicated to the game also accompanies the new version of the operating system.

WebOS is now in version 6.0 and adopts a new interface that gives pride of place to content, grouping the various streaming services on the same page. More astonishing is the native support of the streaming game service Google Stadia. Among the rare weaknesses of the LG 65C1, we note in particular a remote control which is still not backlit.

The LG 65C1 is therefore not a revolution, but stands out without forcing too much as one of the best choices of the moment. And not to spoil anything, we already find it cheaper than the 65CX in its day. We tell you about it in detail in our review of the LG OLED 65C1.

Samsung QE65QN95A (QLED 2021) The mini LED in ambush

  • An improved contrast ratio
  • Gifted for the game
  • The very good brightness

While OLED remains our favorite screen technologist, Samsung continues to improve the LCD with its mini LED technology. In addition to a much better management of the contrast, the mini LED makes it possible to significantly refine the screen. The QN95A is only 2,5cm thick. A tour de force also enabled in part by the OneConnect box which removes all the connections.

What are the best TVs (QLED or OLED) in 2021?

Beyond the look, the Mini LED actually makes it possible to significantly improve the contrast ratio, even if we are not yet at the level of the OLED. We also notice persistent blooming concerns (creating a sort of luminous halo in certain areas), in particular on the subtitles. For once, Samsung delivers a well-calibrated panel right out of the box.

The TV is also very playful with a very low input lag, support for HDMI 2.1 and even compatibility (for the moment unofficial) with Nvidia's G-Sync. Among its rare flaws, we note a cheap remote control and an anti-reflective filter less effective than last year.

If mini LED technology does not yet fully compete with OLED, we have to admit that Samsung is delivering the best LCD TV on the market here. We recommend reading the Samsung QE65QN95A test to get into more details.

Philips 55OLED936 Immerse yourself with Ambilight

What are the best TVs (QLED or OLED) in 2021? Product sheet Getting started with Fnac € 1
  • The Ambilight supplement
  • An excellent latest generation OLED panel
  • The neat sound part
Available at € 1 on Fnac

While the brand does not have the punching power of a Samsung or an LG, Philips continues to benefit from a base of aficionados, mainly thanks to its Ambilight technology. The latter uses programmable RGB LEDs to create a luminous atmosphere on the wall behind the screen, all with the aim of improving immersion.

What are the best TVs (QLED or OLED) in 2021?

For its 2021 vintage, the manufacturer continues to trust OLED by sourcing from LG. More precisely, we find the same EVO panel as on the G1 series. In practice, this translates into a 20% increase in brightness compared to last year and perfectly calibrated colors. The gaming part has for once been the subject of special attention with a display delay time of only 11 ms.

The sound part is distinguished from the competition thanks to a sound bar signed Bowers & Wilkins, to which we can add a subwoofer for more punch or satellites for a better surround effect.

But it is above all the Ambilight, present on 4 sides, which will appeal to fans of technology. If third-party solutions exist, we must admit that Philips remains the best for this kind of lighting.

There remains the high price, not surprisingly. But if you are looking for a very high level OLED panel, this is one of the LG G1's unique competitors. While waiting for our full test, you can read our getting started with the Philips OLED + 986.

TCL 65C825 The micro LED for everyone

8 / 10 What are the best TVs (QLED or OLED) in 2021? Product sheet See the Fnac test € 1
  • Ready for PS5 and Xbox Series X
  • The very good contrast of the mini LED
  • A large diagonal for a reasonable price
Available at € 1 on Fnac

Although the technology is mainly driven by Samsung, a few other players are trying their hand at QLED. This is the case with TCL, which gives us here a rather pretty and technically attractive television set. Among its peculiarities, we note the possibility of adding a webcam to make video calls via Google Duo.

What are the best TVs (QLED or OLED) in 2021?

Designed by TCL, the panel uses a quantum dot panel accompanied by a mini LED backlight. If the infinite blacks of the OLED are not achieved, the contrast is fantastic for an LCD panel. Add to that a brightness exceeding 1000 cd / m² and you can enjoy HDR content in good conditions.

With a Delta E of 2,53, the colorimetry is more than correct, although TCL still has some room to improve. On the gaming side, the copy is quite average. We are certainly entitled to HDMI 2.1 (including VRR), but the input lag in is a little high and Freesync / G-Sync are absent subscribers.

Google TV completes the picture on the OS side, with its efficient interface and a complete software offer. If it does not revolutionize the market, this TV offers extremely good value for money, especially if you are looking for a large diagonal. We tell you more in our test of the TCL 65C825.

Hisense 65U7QF The good surprise

  • Color calibration
  • Value for money
  • Good brightness
Available at € 799 on Amazon Marketplace

For several years now, Hisense has distinguished itself with televisions with an aggressive price-performance ratio. This 65U7QF is no exception to the rule by offering a diagonal of 65 inches for 1000 euros.

What are the best TVs (QLED or OLED) in 2021?

An aggressive price which does not mean that the display quality is catastrophic, quite the contrary. Thus the colorimetry is excellent in SDR and quite correct in HDR. In this mode, we also notice a more than respectable peak in brightness at this price level. On the other hand, gamers will be hungry for more, not only is the afterglow noticeable, but it also does not support the HDMI 2.1 standard. It is therefore impossible to use the full possibilities of the new consoles. The Vidaa U operating system offers most of the major streaming apps, but don't expect to install more advanced software like Kodi.

Despite some flaws, this Hisense 65U7QF nevertheless stands out as excellent value for money in this diagonal. If you want to know more, head to our full review of the 65U7QF.

Low budget TVs

If you are looking for proposals at a low price, you will be spoiled for choice and there are dozens of brands with varying qualities. We recommend that you mainly trust four brands: Samsung, LG, as well as TCL and Hisense to a lesser extent. Unsurprisingly, these are the established manufacturers who manage to transpose their expertise to their entry-level models.

Obviously, you will make concessions on image quality and related features.

Choosing the right 4K HDR television

What are the important points to consider before buying a television?

Before purchasing a TV, it is important to check several settings. The first is obviously the diagonal of the screen in order to find the one that best matches your accommodation. It is also necessary to pay attention to the technology of the panel. We explain all this and many other things to you in our dedicated guide to buying a television.

How do I take full advantage of my new console?

The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X both bring very interesting technologies like VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) which limits tearing or ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) which automatically adjusts the TV to reduce latency. They can also run games in 4K at up to 120 frames per second. To benefit from it, however, the television must be HDMI 2.1 compatible. This version of the interface is however for the moment the prerogative of high or mid-range televisions.

What are the trusted brands?

The TV market is made up of many brands, but the historical TV manufacturers are generally still the ones to be trusted: Sony, LG, Samsung and Philips in the lead. Some Chinese manufacturers also manage to regularly offer interesting products like TCL.

OLED, QLED, LCD, what are the differences?

The main technology at present, the OLED has the particularity of resting organic LEDs (hence the “O”). These emit their own light, which means that each pixel is illuminated independently. Conversely, when we want to display black, it is quite simply off and therefore emits no light. It is for this reason that the contrasts of OLED are said to be “infinite”. This is the main advantage of technology, but there are others.

QLED and LCD are from the same family and require additional lighting. The QLED is therefore an LCD screen, but working with the reinforcement of quantum dots (or quantum dots) to obtain better colors and a deeper contrast. The technology, on the other hand, is more expensive than the classic LCD, so the latter has the advantage of being less expensive. We discuss this in more detail in our article dedicated to screen technologies.

Mini-LED et micro-LED ?

Despite a similar name, these two technologies are radically different. The first describes a backlighting method using more LEDs than the classic "Full LED" for more contrast.

The micro-LED is for its part a direct competitor to the OLED since each pixel is individually illuminated which gives perfect blacks. On paper, the technology also provides better maximum brightness. However, it remains confined to a few ultra high-end models sold for tens of thousands of euros.
