WhatsApp can behave like a real cookie. As soon as you open the application on your mobile, you appear as connected and "online" to all your contacts. If you wanted a little privacy and just discreetly watch what was said in your absence in a discussion group, you have failed! And it is sometimes difficult to reject a contact who wants to start a live conversation, or not to reply to a friend who has written to you when you do not have the time or the inclination to reply ... It turns out to be impossible to hide this famous "online" mention, WhatsApp has a few options to make you less "visible" to everyone. From the most radical to the most selective, here are several methods to prevent your correspondents from being tempted to reach you.
Switch to airplane mode to not connect to WhatsApp
This is a fairly radical way of proceeding, but it has the merit of guaranteeing you complete discretion. All you have to do is activate the airplane mode on your mobile. All network connections (whether 4G or Wi-Fi) are thus cut. Nothing prevents you from opening WhatsApp and then taking a look at the various conversations. Your correspondents will not know and will therefore not try to restart the conversation. On their mobile, under your name, the words Seen at will appear followed by the day and time of your last connection to the app. When you're done, close the app and turn off airplane mode to reestablish communications. Please note, as soon as you open WhatsApp again, you will be visible again with the words "online" under your name on your correspondent's screen. The messages that you have read during this period of disconnection will be displayed as "read" on his mobile, at the time when they reached you and not at the time when you actually read them.
Hide the traces of its passage on WhatsApp
In a discussion, under the correspondent's name, the time at which he was last "seen" is displayed. You can ask the app not to fill in this information as well as prevent it from betraying you by indicating that you have read a message.
- Open WhatsApp. If the app shows a conversation in progress, go back to see the list of all discussions. On Android, tap the three superimposed points at the top right of the screen and choose Parameters. On iOS, press the button Settings at the bottom right of the screen. Then select the menu Account.
- Now press Privacy Policy then on the menu Seen at and choose No one. This way, the time when you opened the app, and which therefore indicates that you were online, will no longer appear with your contacts.
- Go back to privacy settings and flip the switch Read confirmation in order to deactivate the option. So even if you read a message, it will appear unread to your correspondents. Be careful though: this trick does not work in group chats.
Ask your correspondents not to be disturbed on WhatsApp
If you don't want to be disturbed, you can simply warn your correspondents by passing the message on in your status and your news.
- Go to WhatsApp settings, then tap Your name which appears at the top of the screen. Press the menu News.
- Choose from the list of news offered the one that suits you (Busy, In meeting, Urgent calls only, etc.) or touch the menu Currently configured in. You can write the personalized message that will appear for your status. Press on Save to validate.
- Return to the general WhatsApp interface then, on Android, press the menu Status at the top of the screen or, on iOS, the button Status at the bottom left of the screen.
- Press pencil icon on the right of My status. Write the message you want to send, then confirm by pressing the little arrow appeared at the bottom right of the message.
