The new update of Windows 10, simply named May 2021 Update, is available for download in the Preview channel. So we can already download it and try out its novelties, which are not many but improve security and remote access. The real revolution (not just graphics) arrives in October, with the second update of the year that we expect to be much more substantial. But for now we can analyze what are the news and improvements that this spring update brings.
Windows 10 May 2021 Update: the news
The fact that the update isn't substantial isn't necessarily a bad thing for users. The stability of an operating system is the most important quality, especially for those who use it to work or study. Less news means fewer bugs to handle. And even less novelty to get used to. If we wait for a graphic redesign and some important renewed functions in October, this spring we can focus on a few essential aspects.

The features we will be releasing in this update focus on the things that customers who have told us to rely on. Therefore, we have optimized the functions by responding to the most urgent needs of the customers ”.
So if the obvious news are few, under the "engine" of Windows 10 there are many bugs fixed, patches applied and all security updates. Which are essential especially for companies that increasingly apply smart working.
The most obvious news: security and remote access
In addition to the software improvements and fixes, there are three main changes in this update:
- Multi-camera support for Windows Hello. Hello on Windows is not just a greeting but also a way to securely log into the operating system. With the update you can use both the laptop camera and an external webcam for face recognition. If you've purchased a quality webcam in addition to Twitch broadcasts and Zoom calls, you can now feel more confident too.
- Windows Defender Application Guard Performance (WDAG). This new feature allows administrators to configure certain applications to remain isolated in a "virtual container". Microsoft ensures that opening documents and programs remains fast and snappy, while securing the rest of the operating system and network.
- WMI Group Policy Performance. The changes to these policies should make it possible to better support remote work, allowing faster access and controls for those in smart working.
A more evident novelty will instead be the new app Weather and News in the task bar (bottom right of the main screen) which shows you the weather situation and the temperature in real time. An extra convenience, although sometimes we will hate it seeing the bright sun outside the office while we are at the PC. By clicking on it, however, you can see news, stock market fluctuations and much more. All information can be customized to your liking.
How to download the update
The update comes in automatic during the month of May: inexperienced users should be content to wait to receive the update with the usual Windows 10 warning. If you want to speed up the times you can subscribe to the Insider channel: Preview release and Beta they should get the update right away. You can too download the ISO to this address to do a clean installation of the operating system. We do not recommend doing this for less experienced users and in any case on the PC you use to work or study: better wait and be safe.
