Apple explains how to clean and sanitize our iPhones | Coronavirus

Apple has decided to update its guides on the correct cleaning of electronic devices, including iPhone and iPad. The pre-coronavirus methods didn't seem (rightly) more sufficient, but how to perfectly sanitize without damaging our devices?

Apple explains how to clean and sanitize properly

We assume that our hands, on average, touch the smartphone 47 times during a single day. Research conducted by Time even claims that our smartphones contain approx x10 times the amount of bacteria present in a jar WC. It goes without saying that cleaning the smartphone with a mild soap and water solution, as previously suggested by the manufacturers, is no longer enough.

Apple has therefore rushed to modify its official support page, inserting this clear message:

“Is it okay to use a disinfectant on my iPhone?
Using a wipe soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol or Clorox disinfectant wipes, you can gently clean the exterior surfaces of your iPhone. Do not use bleach. Avoid moisture in any opening and do not immerse your iPhone in any detergent. "

Contact with liquids

Check that your smartphone has waterproof or water and dust resistance certifications (IP67, IP68 etc.).

You can find this information directly on the packaging or with a simple internet search.

  • IP 67   possibility of diving up to a depth of one meter and for a maximum of 30 minutes (iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, XR)
  • IP 68  possibility of diving up to one and a half meters deep and for a maximum of 30 minutes (iPhone XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max)

iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5 and earlier do not have the aforementioned certifications, so it is good to be careful when coming into contact with liquids (the greatest risk).

Not just iPhone

Apple also confirms that it is possible to gently clean the hard, non-porous surfaces of other electronic devices such as macbooks (such as screen and keyboard) with disinfectant wipes. Immersion is absolutely forbidden, as it could cause the onset of oxidation and mold. On amazon you can find the same product used in the Apple Stores for cleaning and disinfecting the devices of the bitten apple.
