IRIScan Pro 5 review: the perfect scanner for professionals

Until recently lo scanner it was an almost indispensable item and having it at home was practically mandatory. It was used to digitize financial documents, to create a digital copy of identity cards and passports and even to be able to "photocopy" the most varied texts. Today things have changed. In fact, we hardly find ourselves scanning and photocopying documents and, when it happens, just use your smartphone to solve the problem.

All this, however, hardly applies to the world of work. In fact, the sheets to be digitized are often many and they are necessary precision and speed, features I found in IRIScan Pro 5.

Compact and very fast

Forget the old scanners. IRIScan Pro 5 is compact, boasts a weight that is all in all contained (1,4 kg) and can be easily moved, thanks also to the retractable document support which reduces the overall dimensions to a minimum.

To characterize it then we find a 2,5 cm OLED screen and a series of buttons that can be configured. Yes, you got it right. You can choose between 9 smart actions, so as to further speed up scanning and conversion operations.

Under the body instead we find a concentrate of technology that allows IRIScan Pro 5 to scan 23 sheets per minute or 46 images per minute in duplex mode. A truly impressive speed that - I assure you - it will make your life easier for professionals and freelancers.

What is missing instead is an internal memory. This means that in order to use the peripheral you must necessarily have a computer available. Attention: the scanner is not powered by the USB cable but by the special transformer, so make sure you always have a power outlet close at hand in case you want to change places.

Documents, scans and conversions

However, the IRIScan Pro 5 not only impresses with its design and scanning speed.

First of all it can scan anything, this means that you don't necessarily have to just scan A4 sheets. You can use the front holder to scan health cards, ID cards and even credit cards, as well as photos, business cards, receipts and receipts. There is also a particular mode dedicated to "long paper" which allows you to scan documents that reach 3 meters in length.

However, scanning is only the first part. IRIScan Pro 5 also includes a software package consisting of three different programs:

  • Readiris Corporate, designed to convert paper documents to PDF or Word or Excel formats. If you want, you can also start synchronization with the cloud, which allows you, for example, to upload files to Dropbox;
  • Cardiris Corporate, dedicated to business cards and designed to digitize all information automatically, so you don't have to manually save contacts in the address book;
  • IRIScompressor PRO, designed to create lightweight PDFs without compromising text resolution and legibility.

Of course it is thanks to these software that you can take full advantage of the programmable keys of IRIScan Pro 5. Think of all those times when you have to digitize invoices and receipts and then archive them in a special folder. With this product just create a shortcut that scans the document and uploads it to Dropbox, in a dedicated folder. Simple, fast and very comfortable.

Finally, I would like to point out an absolutely unique feature. IRIScan Pro 5 takes advantage of OCR - the technology for optical character recognition - to transform any file into .wav format. Yes, you got it right. Basically you can get an audio file from individual documents, so you can listen to any text, be it a page of a book or the minutes of a meeting.

IRIScan Pro 5: who is it for?

I anticipated this in the opening words and I want to reiterate it: I firmly believe that IRIScan Pro 5 is not suitable for families and for home use. I find it instead perfect for many professional categories. Think of those who work in the administrative field and have to archive hundreds of documents or those who deal with accounting and need to keep invoices, receipts and receipts. Or again, imagine a lawyer struggling with pages and pages of documents or a doctor who wants to digitize patient medical records. In all these cases the IRIScan Pro 5 can prove to be vital.
