High-class headphones

The eye wants its part e JBL knows how to meet this need. JBL Quantum 800 headphones offer a very elegant design, but not too sober. We have a black livery, heavily interrupted by a coloring RGB LEDs on the pavilions. These are lined with a textured panel, in the center of which the JBL logo emerges, colorful and shimmering. The same is then surrounded by a metallic gray plastic that highlights the area even more. The whole structure is made of plastic, but it is resistant and robust even to bending and twisting.

Going into even more detail, the pavilions are covered with memory foam, in turn wrapped in a eco-leather upholstery. The same lining is also present under the upper arch. This is made of plastic, with a single structure. The memory foam padding is thicker in the pavilions than in the arch, although it is sufficient on this too. In general it is very soft and, together with the wrap-around structure of the headphones, it allows have maximum sound insulation. Although the weight is anything but light, 410 g, comfort is good. In general, in fact, it is possible to wear the headphones for several hours without particular problems. After long playing sessions, the weight is felt, but the weight distribution is good.

    An all-in-one pavilion

Going into the details of the pavilions, we note that both they are home to buttons and functionality. The left pavilion also contains the microphone. This is made with a collapsible foam construction which makes it stiff, yet foldable.

On the same pavilion, we find the door USB Type-C, the input for the 3,5 mm jack, the button to mute the microphone, the wheel to increase and decrease the volume, the wheel to balance audio game / voice chat and the button for canceling the noise.

On the right pavilion, however, we find the key for the Bluetooth and the key to turn the headphones on / off.

How do these JBL Quantum 800s work?

JBL Quantum 800 headphones can function differently depending on the device we want to pair them with. If connected to the PC, they can work via 2.4 GHz wifi, thanks to the USB transmitter. This is none other than one small plastic key, a few centimeters long, black in color. It's quite thin, but it's longer than a lot of other dongles out there. The operation is very simple, connect the key to the PC, turn on the headphones and are automatically ready for use.
The device can also be connected via Bluetooth (excellent for connecting to a mobile phone) and via AUX cable (3,5 mm jack).

If connected to the PC via wifi, the JBL Quantum 800 can offer various functions, manageable via software. This allows us to access the equalization system, to the QuantumSurround (aka JBL proprietary DTS surround) and hall lighting. This is adjustable both on the logo and on the external light ring and boasts not only different colors, but also different speeds. Even the microphone can be managed via software and, while the options aren't too many, sidetone and volume can be adjusted.

How long do the JBL Quantum 800 last?

The JBL headphones have a very limited duration: approx 13 hours without lighting. By turning on the LEDs and keeping the volume at maximum, the battery also lasts less than half. A fairly important flaw for a model of wireless headphones designed for gaming. The JBL Quantum 800 review: an exceptional hybrid

Let's talk about sound: do the JBL Quantum 800s meet our needs?

The JBL Quantum 800 headphones were born to meet the need for gaming, but they also sound good with music. The headphones feature a driver from 50 mm it's a frequency response from 20Hz to 40kHz, A 'impedance of 32 ohm, for an unidirectional microphone with a frequency from 100 Hz to 10 kHz. For this reason, we have tested the same in all areas, obtaining an excellent result. The product, in fact, gives a truly excellent sound: good quality, balanced bass, robust highs and clean vocals. Compared to many gaming headsets, the JBLs are a step above in the music arena.

But how did they respond in game? We tested the headphones in different games to get broader feedback. We immediately catapulted on FPS titles, to understand if directionality and spatial position were correct and then we let ourselves be lulled by RPGs, to better analyze the surround.

In general, the sound has always remained very balanced. Voices are clear, crisp and clean and are never obscured by background noise. The music, in fact, is very well reproduced and never covers the sound of the voices. In Horizon Zero Dawn it was possible to hear the closest noises, as well as the distant sounds of the machines, in perfect harmony.
In Rainbow Six Siege and Call of Duty, on the other hand, we could hear the footsteps of the enemies always coming from the right positions. Spatiality and directionality proved to be very good. The JBL Quantum 800 review: an exceptional hybrid

And how does the microphone behave?

The microphone is good, although not excellent. Il sound it's enough crisp and clean and, perhaps, even more so by lowering it slightly via QuantumEngine. The voice comes out clear, even the anti-pop filter works well and we do not hear particular metallic annoyances.

To give you a more objective idea, however, we have recorded a small audio:

      Does noise cancellation work?

The JBL Quantum 800 headphones have the active noise cancellation function which can also be used via Bluetooth. This works quite well, discreetly eliminating background noise without changing the sound too significantly. In gaming headsets this is a feature not always present, but it is pleasant, especially if you play in non-silent environments. In general, JBL's headphones perform very well.

JBL Quantum 800: si o no?

If we were to rely on features alone, the JBL Quantum 800 headphones would be a yes with flying colors. They are comfortable to wear and the sound is definitely performing. The headphones are packed with features and connections; you can use them with any device without too much effort. The management software allows a good customization of the equalization and colors.

What doesn't convince us then? The price. Unfortunately, the headphones are quite expensive, about 200 € and they have some flaw, like one very short-lived battery. Unfortunately, this is the biggest crux that the product has. Sure, the sound quality is arguably some of the best, especially for hybrid listening, but thinking about using them for less than 10 hours is a little frustrating.
In any case, if you are looking for a model that can give you pleasant moments, not only in play, the JBLs are for you, without a shadow of a doubt.
