Comparison Iliad, I have Mobile, Tim and Wind / TRE: speed test in Lombardy. Who wins the challenge?

With the arrival of the two new mobile operators, Iliad e I have Mobile, the mobile phone market received a jolt. Both the two new "actors" have brought very low prices and many, lots of jigs to surf at bargain prices. But how they cope with the browsing speed? We have tested new and old operators - with trivial ones speed test - to see how they fared in some provinces of the Lombardy (Milan, Monza and Brianza, Bergamo and Lecco). Which will have won between TIM, Iliad, ho Mobile and Wind / Tre? Let's try to find out together.

How we did the speed test

We have equipped ourselves with four top-of-the-range smartphones and four different SIMs divided as follows.

  • Samsung Galaxy S9+ con sim TIM;
  • LG G7 with sim ILIAD (which for now relies partly on Wind / Tre networks and partly on proprietary infrastructure);
  • Honor 10 with sim I have Mobile (virtual operator of Vodafone);
  • Google Pixel 2 XL con sim Wind / Three;

On each of the smartphones we have installed aapplication to perform speed tests call Meteor. We chose this app because it is one of the few that provides a judgment on the quality / speed of the network in order to make the data understandable to anyone (even your grandmother would know how to read them!)

The parameters for measuring the network speed are the classics Ping, Download e Upload:

  • Ping: is a value that measures the transmission delay. The lower the value, the more reactive the network (0 to 30 milliseconds is optimal);
  • Download Speed: means the speed with which you download on your device (for example when you watch a video on YouTube, download a Netflix movie locally);
  • Upload speed: means the speed with to upload data from your device (for example when you upload a video to YouTube, make a direct on Facebook or post a photo on Instagram);

I would also like to say a few words on the choice of places to test: it is too easy to do speed tests in the city center. More or less, connections in cities are always good. For this reason we have decided to undertake tests in some places (mountains and lakes) that usually suffer a little more when it comes to connection speeds to the mobile data network.

But let's start with our speed tests right away. In this video you can see all the effort we made to travel over 250 km with an average temperature of 34 degrees! Otherwise, skip the video and go straight to the tables with the speed test in comparison between Iliad, I have Mobile, TIM e Wind / Three with some additional cold-minded consideration.

Speed Test 1: City Life Milan shopping center

At the City Life shopping center in Milan (we can consider it a fairly central area) we have first of all purchased the sim I have Mobile. In 5 minutes we made the purchase and activation of the sim.
In the middle of Piazza Tre Torri, we performed the speed test. In this case ILIAD he beat everyone hands down and reached a speed of almost 100 Mbps in download but with a bit high Ping. I have a bit of a poor Mobile while the old operators TIM and Wind / Tre have done quite well.

Ping 20 66 45 36
Download 20 92,9 10,2 29,2
Upload 19,7 40,1 - 21,7

Speed Test 2: Motorway service station, Brianza Sud - Caponago (Monza and Brianza province)

From Milan, we took the motorway and threw ourselves onto the A4, stopping to get petrol at the Brianza Sud service station, near the city of Caponago. Here TIM and I Mobile have done quite well both with worthy speeds even if not mind-boggling, with a Ping that nevertheless amazes. As you can see, Iliad and Wind / Tre are equal, probably because in this area Iliad does not yet have its own infrastructure installed and relies precisely on the Wind networks.

Ping 20 67 27 67
Download 55,6 15,7 48,8 21,9
Upload 18,5 8,1 17,7 11,9

Speed Test 3: Bergamo Center

We finally went out at the exit of Bergamo and we reached Porta Nuova, an absolutely central area of the city. We ran the third speed test of the day in a parking lot on the side of the road.
Here a Bergamo center amazingly the connection speed offered by TIM outclasses all the others, Followed by I have mobile. Iliad and Wind / Tre a little scarce.

Speed Test 4: Bergamo Upper Town (Bergamo province)

We later ventured into the marvelous Upper town of Bergamo. We parked the car near Porta Sant'Agostino and here, on a wall with attached mosses and lichens, we carried out the test. TIM again first in the standings, closely followed by ho mobile and Wind / Tre. Strange but true Iliad, very poor. In this case, we gave Iliad a second chance by running a second speed test but the result was always the same.

Speed Test 5: Bergamo Città Alta, second attempt (Bergamo province)

Tired and hungry, we headed to the beating heart of the upper town of Bergamo to put something under your teeth. Here we walked about 500 meters but all uphill. Almost certain of the change in signal reception, we performed another speed test in a small restaurant.
As you can see from the table and the photo, total debacle of three out of four operators. The only one who is saved very well is I have Mobile which has maintained a stable signal compared to the previous one.
Given the difficulty of all operators, also in this case all four speed tests were performed twice. The recorded data relates to the second attempt.

Speed Test 6: Ascension of Costa Serina (Bergamo province)

However, we were not satisfied, deciding to go even higher and reaching the Val Serina, precisely in the hamlet of Ascensione di Costa Serina. Here, always, the best operator is Vodafone and, our tests confirm what has been said. I have Mobile (which we remind you to be the virtual operator of Vodafone) travels at high speed with a nice 71,4 Mbps. Tim and Iliad are scarce, while for Wind / Tre it is a sharp no.

Speed Test 7: Lungolago Lecco (province of Lecco)

From the mountains to the lake. From Costa Serina, we headed to Lecco, to see how our four operators are doing in the lakeside area of Lake Lecco. Here at Lecco again I have. Mobile beats the competition with a nice 55.3 Mbps while the other operators are not doing very well, not even reaching a speed of 10 Mbps. In short, Vodafone networks are stable and decidedly "overbearing".

Speed Test 8: Seregno (Monza and Brianza province)

From Lecco, we went down to Brianza, stopping at seregno. Here TIM went better competition without reaching stellar speeds. 23.4 Mbps is nothing special. Well but not a wonder, here.

Speed Test 9: Monza Villa Reale (Monza province)

Last but not least we stopped in front of the splendid Villa Reale in Monza to pay homage to the palace of our four speed tests. In the provincial capital of Monza and Brianza, TIM has exceeded 100 Mbps in download (like an excellent home fiber optic) without excelling with uploading. I Mobile, on the other hand, impresses with its almost symmetrical data transmission (virtually identical downloads and uploads).
Not bad at all also Iliad and Wind / Tre.

Who is the best operator between Iliad, I have Mobile, TIM and Wind / Tre?

When it comes to mobile speed, you are never an absolute winner. We would like this to be clear. With our test we understood that the two new players on the market, ILIAD e IT'S MOBILE, they are as reliable as the incumbents. They take well in some places and take poorly in others. If you live in big cities, aren't you asking yourself too many questions about "takes or doesn't take"? In large urban centers, the connection always reaches speeds suitable for optimally performing all routine operations: using Facebook, watching Netflix in streaming, directing on Facebook or uploading photos to Instagram.

If, on the other hand, you live in smaller towns, at the lake or in the mountains, Vodafone it always represents a guarantee (we noticed it both in Lecco and in Bergamo). In conclusion, I have Mobile, in our tests it turned out to be the best solution for the most "remote" places.

Let's talk now about Iliad: until the French operator finishes the construction of the proprietary infrastructure, it will have to rely on the Wind / Tre networks. This - as far as Lombardy is concerned - means having excellent coverage in large inhabited centers and poorer coverage in more "wild" areas.

Generally speaking, if you are thinking of change operator to save on the monthly cost it will be enough for you to do this reasoning, albeit a little (very) briskly.

  • In your area Vodafone has always been the best? Go quietly on I have Mobile.
  • You live in big cities? Iliad it will be great for your needs.
