Disintegration: the hybrid of Marcus Lehto

Marcus Lehto, co-founder of the Halo universe, has decided to found his own studio, V1 Interactive and to create a new title, Disintegration. We are not dealing with a classic shooter, here, in fact, there is something more. The game is a combination of FPS (First Person Shooter) and RTS (Real Time Strategy) elements. How is it possible to combine these two genres? Leaving aside preconceptions and trying to build a new universo.

In Disintegration, in fact, we will govern both an armed flying vehicle, with all the peculiarities of a first-person shooter, and a small earth unit. Each of our team members will have different skills that we can combine together with our firepower.

But first a bit of history

Disintegration offers both a single player and a multiplayer sector. As for the main campaign, this will see us take on the role of Romer Shoal, a former gravitational pilot.
After the spread ofIntegration, process and keeps human brains inside robotic armor, the world has divided. On the one hand there are the forces of Rayon, fanatics who want nothing more than the elimination of human society. On the other hand, there are the Outlaw, of which Romer is the leader, or those who fight against the integrated forces.

Our protagonist is a somewhat particular character. Before the integration, he was, in fact, the host of a television show about gravicycles. These are none other than single-seat antigravity vehicles. Their structure reminds us a little of that of the shells of Star Wars: a compartment for the pilot in the center and the engines on the sides. They were initially used for rescue and reconnaissance missions, but were later equipped with weapons and control signals to ensure tactical support.

The narration, however, although it has excellent premises, yes it loses a bit over time, leaving more room for the gameplay itself. Disintegration review: a hybrid that works

A successful mix?

As mentioned, Disintegration is a complex title. This is not a simple shooter, but a combination of genres. The game includes, in fact, both features belonging to a traditional shooter, and to a real-time strategy one.

The best strategy is certainly those of be able to incorporate the two mechanics to enjoy the title at 100%. It is not easy, it is true, but gradually, with experience, all players will be able to obtain this fluidity of the game.
Disintegration, however, can also be played by lovers of one or the other genre. Those who are more related to FPS, will focus their gameplay on the use of the gravicycle. This, in fact, having its own weapons, will be able to practically counter the enemies alone. Focusing on his work, we will forget about team skills, but that will not stop us from completing the mission.

If, on the other hand, our style of play is closer to that of the strategists, it will be enough for us to act in the opposite way. We can indeed keep our distance by relying on our team. Our task will then become to manage the different units, combining their skills, in order to bring home the victory.

How do you manage the team?

Within Disintegration we will have more ways to command ground units. By default these they will follow the commander, staying in front of the gravicycle. During the course of the fight, however, we will be able to give different orders and then deploy the units on the field exactly where you want them. In fact, by clicking on specific points on the ground, our allies will take a position, for example by finding shelter during the enemy advance.

Similarly, we can ask the team to attack a specific target. By issuing this particular order, our units will abandon their cover and go on the attack.
We will always have to do caution ad give orders correctly, or we may risk exposing our team too much. Often, however, prioritization is necessary to take out a hard-to-take down enemy.Disintegration review: a hybrid that works

Disintegration offers several combat tactics

The home title V1 Interactive does mainly focuses on gameplay. Not only will it be possible to play with hybrid mechanics, but we will also have the opportunity to choose different combat systems.

Before starting a battle it is very useful to make use of the scan mode. We will be able to this way identify all enemies by highlighting them on the screen. This function will allow you to have a global view of the battle, allowing us to plan the best attack.
It is also very important to make use of daze. If stunned, the enemies will not be able to move or attack and this will give us a huge advantage in the actions, but how to do?

There are several techniques to carry out the action. The most common ones see us making use of of stun grenades, melee attacks or blunt tremor. However, there are also more advanced techniques, such as those related to props. Blow up objects on the map, will generate the same stunning effect. If it is not possible to blow up objects, we can think of doing it with the enemies themselves. THE robot that will burst, they will emit a shock wave that will stun nearby units.
Another way, however, is to hit enemies on the side or back.

You will also need to pay attention to the health of your gravicycle and the team itself. Scattered around the map there will be some boxes that will allow the restoration of health. In the same way we will be able to gain energy with the spheres released by the enemies during the fight. In addition to this, some types of gravicycles will have one heal function as a secondary weapon.
Combining all the team and driver skills will surely give us victory.Disintegration review: a hybrid that works

Just shoot the AI only

However, Disintegration does not only offer a single player sector. The title, in fact, also opens up to the online world. Regarding the multiplayer we will have three modes available: Collection, Zone Control and Recovery.

The first will see the two sides contend for the largest number of neurobacks. These can be recovered in three different ways: from enemy gravicycles, from enemy units or from the game map. The first are worth three points, the second and third one each. At the end of the time limit, the team with the greater number of neuroboxes (and therefore points) will win victory.

The second game mode, namely Zone Control, it is easy to understand. The two sides in the game will have to conquer specific areas of the map. Capturing an area means placing your ground units, completely free from enemy obstacles.

Finally we have the mode Recovery. This reminds us a little of the placement of the Spike of Valorant. We will in fact have two teams, one deployed in attack and one in defense. Purpose of the game: recover the cores on the map and transport them to the designated point, if we play in attack, defend and avoid the success of the action, if we are on the opposite side.

The multiplayer will also offer us different crews, with different characteristics and skills. We will have King's Guard, The Sideshows, Neon Dreams, Tech Noir, Warhedz, Lost Ronin, Business, Muertos and The Militia. Choosing the best one will only depend on our type of game. Some, in fact, will have a graviciclio equipped with a sniper rifle, others instead of an assault rifle, still others with bombs and missiles. Land units will also change, as will shields and travel speeds. You can try out the crews in the multiplayer sandbox.

Disintegration, yes or no?

Disintegration is a peculiar title that seeks to please everyone, offering uncommon game mechanics. It is in fact halfway between a classic shooter and a strategic one, showing characteristics of both factions. From a certain point of view it can also be played with one preponderance towards one side rather than the other, but it will never be defined by just one genre.

In order to play it, you need to put aside your beliefs and be open-minded. In this way it will be possible enjoy interesting and feature-rich gameplay.
There are many weapons, tactics and functions that we can combine, for satisfying clashes. Unfortunately, the narrative often remains in the background, even if it offers interesting premises. What did not convince us is perhaps the little emphasis with which the topics are treated. Not bad for all the players who, on the other hand, they prefer confrontation to narration. They will be faced with a game with excellent skills, which offers an interesting challenge.

Furthermore, it should be noted that, although Italian will be present as a translation of the subtitles at the exit, the only language available for the audio sector will be English.
