Dragon Ball Z Kakarot review: a jump into the past with Goku

Il January 17 2020 is finally out Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, title available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and this is the our review. Will the CyberConnect2 title really be the masterpiece fans have been looking forward to? Let's find out together!

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot review

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is a action RPG e Open-world which traces the history of Dragon Ball Z in detail and faithfully, dividing into four great chapters that we already know: the Saga of the Saiyans, of Freeza, of Cell and finally of Majin Buu.

Protagonist of the story, although I believe that anyone on the face of the earth already knows it, it is Goku: in this series the boy is now grown up and is the father of Gohan, a child of about four years. Here, too, our hero will have to face various enemies and defeat them to restore peace to planet Earth.

After being catapulted into the home screen along with a nice series of images, we can adjust the game settings. There are only two voiceovers available: Japanese ed English, both beautifully crafted.

Then, after setting the language and subtitles, and having adjusted the brightness and every technical element, our adventure begins.

A peculiarity that immediately catches the eye is the lack of a difficulty level: this can be positive or negative, depending on the player. I personally find it positive, as it develops in crescendo.

We will start with simple fights up to real more complicated boss fights, which will give us a hard time. The lack of a level of difficulty allows us to train hard during the game and to better face every battle: in short, it pushes us to strengthen and improve.

However, this could be a negative element for all those who perhaps usually start a game with a medium level and then, once finished, want to start it again with a more difficult mode.

Open-world and graphics: the perfect combo

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot review: a jump into the past with GokuRight from the start the open-world aspect is interesting, allowing the player to explore the surrounding environment and feel at home. Furthermore, the graphic characterization of the characters goes beyond expectations: they were made in an excellent way, almost touching reality.

The videos are characterized by intense and vibrant colors, perfectly recalling the anime that kept us company as children after school. They present an attention to the decidedly meticulous detail e accurate, which makes a difference.

Unfortunately, however, they are very frequent and for non-fans of the brand this element could be annoying in the long run. Except, of course, for fans who will pay attention to every second of footage with great pleasure.

A little less excellent is the graphics that characterize the outside world since it appears, albeit well done, in a way superficial e it is clearly in the background when compared with the creation of the characters and the various films. The attention to detail we saw earlier here is left on the road.

Open-world means that, in addition to following the main story that we already know and that never ceases to excite us, we will be able to run into the following options: random fights with characters that allow us to level up and the secondary missions.

These, unfortunately, turn out to be enough monotone, uninteresting and fin too simple. They only serve to detach a little from the main story, explore and earn items.

Combat System and Encyclopedia Z

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot review: a jump into the past with GokuWhat particularly characterizes Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is undoubtedly the combat system. Most of the title is focused on the story and on the fights and although they are very frequent, they never tire us.

The combat system was in fact made in flawless way and will allow us to put it into practice all moves which, slowly, we will learn during the course of the title. In addition to this, although it is an arena fight, the fights are not in the least chaotic and we will always know what we have to do.

The attacks of the characters are faithful to the anime and finally we will be able to launch the phantom Energetic wave that we enjoyed throwing at our brothers and sisters when we were little turtles (do you understand?).

Little turtles because ...

The Kamehameha, or Energy Wave, literally means "destructive wave of the turtle".

Another interesting element, designed mainly for veterans of the saga, are the collectable. They are present all over the world and will fill ours Z encyclopedia. In addition, the collectibles have been made in honor of Dragon Ball: for example at Goku's house, we will find a photo of him and Krillin as children while they are grappling with a challenge from the master Roshi.

These are collectibles that ultimately allow the player to make a further leap from the past and to stir up, in the most sensitive, a few small tears of nostalgia.

Also in the course of our adventure we will get some Soul emblems. These are emblems that will allow us to increase statistics depending on the section in which they will be placed: for example experience points, skill in the kitchen, strength in combat, the ability to repair objects etc. In addition to this they will be useful to give life to some combinations that will give us gods fundamental bonuses.

A fundamental element is completeness since although it is something already known, reliving the story of Dragon Ball Z in this title will allow us to get to know it even more thoroughly.

We will also live the story from different points of view since we will be able to use various characters during the course and this will allow us not only to appreciate it even more, but also to have an even more detailed general picture.

In fact, we note the presence of Akira Toriyama, who participated in this project as a consultant.

Let's sum up: is this the game we were waiting for?

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot review: a jump into the past with Goku

How can this Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot review end? What does this title offer players? The title made by CyberConnect2 looks like a ottimo prodotto, made mainly and specifically for the fans of the saga and the brand.

Like every element on this planet, including Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has flaws but these are aspects that in the eyes of a fan will not be taken into consideration at all. This title retraces faithfully a story that has accompanied many players throughout their childhood and which will continue to do so thanks to its presence.

The graphics of the characters and the original soundtrack, accompanied by the adrenaline that rises during each fight and the joy of seeing our heroes transform, make this an even more intense and unique experience.

After all, as children, we all dreamed of riding the Nuvola Kinto and to ride the skies with Goku. And we all raised our hands to give it the energy during the Sfera Genkidama: the best thing is that, even now, we will do it (I would gladly attach the video of my brother, XNUMX years old, who does it but I risk dying).

Those who instead I'm not a fan of the saga could risk get bored in the course of history due to the vast presence of films, the repetitiveness of the fighting and the monotony of the secondary missions.

In conclusion, it should be noted that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is one small and rare relic for fans, who will be extremely happy to fight alongside their heroes, putting aside the defects that characterize the title but which, probably, make it unique.
