FreeWifi, it's over: the operator cuts the service on all Freeboxes

The FreeWifi community network no longer exists. Already disappeared from Freebox Pop and Delta, the operator seems to have cut the service on all its other boxes. Available since 2009, Xavier Niel believes that the rise of 4G has made it obsolete.

Say goodbye to FreeWiFi. This community service, which allowed Free subscribers to connect to the network of another Free box, no longer exists. We suspected that his days were numbered. Indeed, it already disappeared from Freebox and Delta at the start of the year. Xavier Niel's operator therefore dealt the final blow to the service, which no longer appears in the list of available networks when activated on the Freebox Revolution and mini 4K.

Launched in 2009, FreeWifi can claim to have been the largest community network in the world, which has proven to be very useful for many subscribers whose mobile data envelope did not always provide enough to browse the web outside of home. This is no longer the case today, and Xavier Niel believes that “the need is less”, which has prompted him to cut costs. Indeed, the large-scale deployment of 4G, and now 5G, has ended up make the service obsolete.

5G buries FreeWifi

However, the service FreeWifi_Secure is still available. The latter works in the same way as FreeWifi, except that it is aimed at smartphone users. Free Mobile subscribers can thus connect to the Wi-Fi network of a Freebox by selecting it from the available list, without any password being asked.

Subscribers will therefore now have to rely on their mobile data envelope to use web services far from their Internet box. Free recently pushed its 5G offer, which also offers speeds that are satisfactory to say the least, with a record reached at 723 mb / s for download. As for the FreeWifi network, it is the end of an era.
