The power of Google

Google Chrome represents approximately 50% of Internet users in the world (and more than 60% on FrAndroid), which gives the Mountain View firm enormous power to influence Internet practices. So she decided to join the Coalition for Better Ads, a group campaigning for healthier advertising formats. As such, Google Chrome will no longer show ads that do not meet coalition standards from early 2021. A decision that the Wall Street Journal had already mentioned last April.

This period should allow advertising networks to adapt and content publishers to test their site using the Web Tools offered by Google.

Double winner

By integrating an ad blocker directly into its browser, Google certainly hopes to lower the rate of use of third-party blockers such as AdBlock Plus or uBlock Origin. The advantage is then twofold for the search giant, which can then control more precisely the advertisements that pass through the cracks and which reduces the influence of third-party actors who sometimes act like a mafia by charging content creators. advertising so that their displays are not blocked.

Google's income is mainly based on advertising, so it seems normal that the Californian company is closely interested in the issue.

The paid alternative

For those who no longer want ads at all, Google also offers Funding Choices. Currently in beta, this system allows sites to display a message to users of an ad blocker in order to invite them to deactivate it or to subscribe to Contributor. This is a subscription system that allows you to remove all advertisements from a site. It works as some sites already offer, but centralizing everything on a single subscription.

The site developers can set the price that will be deducted from the subscription envelope themselves, starting at $ 0,01 per page. A small handful of sites already use this system (Business Insider, ComicBook, Eurogamer…), and others will follow in the year. However, only American, English, German, Australian and New Zealand sites can benefit from it for the moment. Other countries will be added to this list during 2021.

It remains to be seen now whether this will not lead to the more devious ads. For our part, we make it a point of honor on FrAndroid to clearly and visibly report brand content.
