Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: “infinite” battery and incredible performance

Huawei Mate 20 Pro has been on sale in Italy for a short time now. We have tried it for you and we will tell you - in ours review - how is this top-of-the-range smartphone with truly impressive performance. Is it really the perfect smartphone?

Before starting with what judgment we want, we must discover the technical features of the latest Huawei flagship.

Design already seen, performance to scream

The design of Huawei Mate 20 Pro it's not particularly original. It looks a lot like Oppo Find X and Samsung Galaxy S9. But design is not its strong point. What's under the sheet is its strong point.

Il design is clean: the headphone jack, the speaker but also the fingerprint sensor disappear. The latter comes integrated under the display and - I have to be honest - it's not as lightning-fast as the good good old key. It is also positioned in a part of the display that is difficult to reach by very small hands.

As for the jack and speaker, on the other hand, everything has been integrated into the USB Type-C connector. The atypical solution of the speaker integrated into the connector means that the audio is good enough when the connector is not "plugged", while when you plug in the charging cable, the audio volume will decrease drastically. In short, it is not really a winning solution.

Huawei for its Mate 20 Pro has also thought of reducing the SIM trolley to a minimum by creating a new memory card format that fits perfectly into the SIM slot. Ingenious solution to save space.

The performance and the camera are really the strong point of this smartphone

Almost unlimited battery

The new proprietary processor HiSilicon Kirin 980 (with dual NPU) integrated into this Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the real flagship of this top of the range. The artificial intelligence of him is there and you can feel it. The processor is in fact capable of optimizing all smartphone processes to save battery without affecting performance. This means that with particularly heavy use (aka being on the phone all day) the battery from 4200 mAh it will take you to the end of the day - around 22.00 - with a nice 10% of remaining charge.
If, on the other hand, you use it normally, you can count on a good day and a half of autonomy.

"Wireless reverse charging" function

However, Huawei did not want to stop there and showed its muscles with its "reverse" charge in wireless mode: this means that you can use your Mate 20 Pro as if it were a wireless charging base to charge the smartphone of a person to whom you want particularly well. It is not a function that happens to use very often but it is a function that shows - in an elegant enough way - that the battery is so durable that it can give charge to others.

Fast charging - Huawei SuperCharge - which will be able to recharge the battery up to 70% in just 30 minutes is also very fast and super convenient.

We will not be here to praise the overall performance of the smartphone, because from a 1000 euro smartphone we would expect nothing less than truly top performance.

“Square” camera with triple optics

With this Huawei Mate 20 Pro the Chinese giant almost definitively retires the much vaunted black and white sensor. The collaboration with Leica remains but the black and white disappears.

The three quirky but functional rear cameras now also boast a decidedly versatile wide-angle camera. The photos taken are great and finally the artificial intelligence does not make the photos as artificial as the predecessor Huawei P20 Pro did.

The photographic sector is composed as follows:

  • 40 MP wide angle with f / 1.8 aperture
  • 20 MP ultra wide angle with f / 2.2 aperture
  • 8 MP telephoto with f / 2.4 aperture

Particularly interesting is the “night mode” already introduced with P20 Pro which allows you to take pictures with long exposure (up to 4 seconds) hand-held, thanks to the powerful optical stabilizer.

Here are the results of several shots.

The photo above was taken with the 40MP sensor, which is the main sensor.

This instead is the photo taken with the 20MP ultra-wide angle sensor which, like almost all wide angles, tends to bend and deform the image at the ends of the shot.

While the latter is really noteworthy. This is a photo taken with an excellent 3X zoom: look at how beautiful the depth and the "detachment" between the objects in the foreground and those in the background are defined. Really a bomb.

Let's now pass to the "night mode" also applied to the ultra-wideangle sensor. The image is not bad at all even if there is a lot of noise (look at the grainy ceiling).

This instead is the main sensor with and without night mode. Judge for yourself. I prefer the normal version.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro: buy it or not?

To all those who are asking me for advice, the answer is yes. If you can afford to spend $ 1000 on a phone, this device is really great especially for work. It is obviously recommended for all those people who do not want to compromise on performance, battery and camera. For now, the rivals of this flagship phone can really be counted on the fingers of one hand. If you like the Huawei brand, if you crave a wide-angle camera and a record-breaking battery, this is the device you shouldn't miss.

Don't you want any of this? Well, the market offers hundreds of other viable solutions for you.
