Huawei P30 review: few compromises and a lot of quality

Woe to liquidate Huawei P30 as a mere "cheap" clone of his older brother. In fact, there is some difference and not necessarily negative. The smartphone of the Chinese giant in fact managed to convince us, above all thanks to the smaller dimensions and the significant weight reduction. We talk about it in this review.

Huawei P30: the technical sheet

Let's start, as usual, with the specifications of this top of the range.

Compact and handy

The first thing you will notice about the Huawei P30 are undoubtedly the dimensions: you can hold and manage it peacefully with one hand and, for sure, you will tire less, thanks to the almost 30 grams less of this variant. Sure, I missed the double edge of the Pro version a little, but in reality the flat panel isn't bad at all.

On the back we have an elegant glass back cover - in our case in the Breathing Crystal variant - and the camera module, while the right edge houses the volume rocker and the on / off button with a very welcome red insert. On the left, the SIM slot and any proprietary NM memory, while on the bottom we have the USB Type-C connector, the mono speaker and, unlike the older brother, the ever popular 3,5mm jack. Compared to the P30 Pro though we lose the IP68 certification - here we stop at IP53 - and wireless charging.

Rather unchanged instead the display that yes, it is smaller (6,1 inches against the 6,47 of the more expensive variant), but remains always an OLED with Full HD resolution, 18: 9 format, notch and HDR. Under the screen we also find the same ear capsule and the same fingerprint reader as the P30 Pro. The first works quite well even if you have to get used to the unusual position, while the second is surprisingly lightning fast even if I continue to prefer unlocking with the face.

Performance unchanged

The hardware differences little affect the performance of this Huawei P30, also because the CPU and GPU remain identical. The RAM drops to 6 GB but this does not prevent you from having a smooth, responsive smartphone capable of withstanding all kinds of stress. No 256 GB cut for Huawei P30 but 128 GB was ample enough for me and then, in an emergency, you can use the aforementioned proprietary NM card.

Excellent connectivity and reception, good audio and absolutely promoted the battery which, despite being considerably lower than the one on the older brother, manages to take you to the end of the day and even cover part of the next one.

On the other hand, there is little to say about the operating system. Like always Android 9.0 Pie and EMUI 9.1 are a great match even if - I'll never stop saying it - Huawei's proprietary interface would need a nice refresh from a graphical point of view.

A real guarantee

The photographic sector of Huawei P30 is difficult to criticize. In fact, you have a triple rear camera with s40 megapixel RYB main ensor (the same as P30 Pro), a 16 megapixel wide angle it's a 8 megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and OIS. It goes without saying that together these three sensors offer you all the versatility you need, but also a lot, a lot of quality, both during the day and in low light conditions.

For selfie lovers then there is the 32 megapixel front camera it offers detailed shots, natural colors and a really convincing backlight management.

Finally, videos that can reach 4K @ 30 fps are promoted.

Huawei P30: buy it or not?

799 € for this Huawei P30. It is not a popular price but it allows you to take home a truly excellent device at a lower price than the P30 Pro. Of course, you will have to give up some elements, but most of the sacrifices required will be practically painless.
