iOS 14.5: Face ID will unlock your iPhone if you wear a mask and an Apple Watch

With iOS 14.5, Apple will allow Face ID to unlock your iPhone even if you are wearing a Covid-19 mouth mask. On the other hand, you must imperatively wear an Apple Watch on your wrist. With this iOS update, still at the development stage, the Cupertino company is finally adapting its facial recognition to the constraints of the health crisis.

Introduced in 2021 on the iPhone X, iPhone Face ID recognition is able to understand and adapt to changes in your face over time. To recognize the iPhone user, Face ID needs to be able to identify your eyes, nose and mouth. These constraints prevent facial recognition from working if you are wearing a sanitary mouth mask.

Apple automatically redirects mask wearers to the unlock code. When you move in a public place, Face ID is therefore completely unnecessary. But faced with the widespread use of masks, the Cupertino company has developed a new option to facilitate the use of Face ID.

An option will allow you to use Face ID with a mask

With the iOS 14.5 update, currently available in beta for developers, it is possible unlock your iPhone with Face ID even if you are wearing a mask. To take advantage of this option, you must wear an unlocked Apple Watch on your wrist, report our colleagues from Engadget. Some developers have posted videos showing how the option works on social media.

Concretely, an option deactivated by default will allow Face ID to be satisfied withpartial facial scan if the wearer has linked an Apple Watch to their iPhone. Face ID will just analyze your eyes and the top of your face and compare them to the benchmark data. Once the iPhone is unlocked, the connected watch will notify the wearer using haptic feedback. Best of all, it will be possible to unlock the iPhone directly from the Apple Watch.

Unsurprisingly, this option is not offered for validate purchases with Apple Pay or purchase apps from the App Store. For that, you will have to remove your mask for a complete scan or better: enter your unlock code or your password. For now, it is not known when Apple will deploy the final version of iOS 14.5 on compatible iPhones.
