IPhone 13: the biggest novelty in photo would have leaked

All iPhone 13s would benefit from a new ultra-wide-angle sensor without any compromise on quality. The sensor would in particular be better suited to night photos. It was initially thought that the new mod would be exclusive to Pro models, but a new report says the component will be present on all variants.

High-end smartphones are now generally excellent in photography. This is so true that their shots are often difficult to identify when mixed with other images taken from professional cameras. However, when we talk about the photo quality of smartphones, we often think more about photos from the main sensor than the photos from the ultra-wide angle or even those from the telephoto lens after a certain magnification threshold.

Fact creating really bright “ultra-wide angles” and telephoto lenses for smartphones is very difficult. These components require more complex optics, all in very space-constrained devices - which limits the amount of light that reaches the sensor. This is why you will have noticed it on all high-end smartphones: the photos taken from the wide angle or the telephoto lens are much less balanced and precise than the others. And it's even worse in low light.

IPhone 13: Apple would have found how to integrate an ultra-wide-angle sensor without compromise

These sensors in fact let in less light than the main sensor, and therefore the night images are prickly noise, and are on the whole less usable. This is true according to both the sensors of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max as those of the iPhone 11 of last year or the smartphones of leading competitors like the Samsung S21 Ultra and the Huawei P40 Pro. Apple would nevertheless have planned an innovation in this area, programmed for the iPhone 13.

According to a report by Barclays, Apple would integrate a new ultra-wide angle with an aperture of f / 1.8 against f / 2.4 for the current generation. Enough to let in a lot more light which should allow it to deliver beautiful night photos, like the main sensor. As a bonus, the new module will embed a additional lens and will have autofocus. Current smartphones have a module made up of 5 lenses with fixed focal length.

There has been talk for some time about the arrival of this improved sensor. It was initially rather expected on the Pro models, but according to Barclays, Apple finally decided to implement it on all variants. We note that other improvements are also expected on the telephoto of the Pro models. We would thus be entitled to an equivalent 65 mm lens with a larger f / 2.2 aperture.
