Microsoft has chosen its browser: since April only Edge based on Chromium

Since the update of the 13th April, the default browser of Windows 10 is Microsoft Edge basato su Chromium. The Redmond company has decided to delete the old version of Edge Legacy from all PCs, to make room for the version based on the open source Chromium browser, the same used by Google's Chrome. However, the patch is not mandatory.

Microsoft is all about Chromium-based Edge

With Windows 10 came a browser based on EdgeHTML, written "in house" by the developers of Redmond. An important step forward in terms of performance compared to the historical Internet Explorer. But it did not have many of the comforts that we are now used to associate with a modern web browser.

For this reason, Microsoft has started working on one in recent years Edge version based on Chromium. This allows you to use the extensions used by other browsers based on open source software (the most used of which is Google Chrome). In terms of performance and utility, this version of Edge has nothing to envy to competitors. Indeed, we are also using it to write this article.

The April update is not required (but recommended)

Most people who use Edge on a daily basis use the Chromium-based version. For them, the update means little. Those who use the EdgeHTML-based version should know that after the March 9, 2021 Microsoft stops releasing security updates of the browser. So while the April 13 update isn't mandatory, it's highly recommended from a security standpoint.

Also the patch by the security update, so it may be risky to skip it. Microsoft also points out that the EdgeHTML graphics engine continues to be supported, so applications based on that protocol work even without Edge Legacy.

You can read all the technical details of the update on the Microsoft blog. The new browser is stable and performing, plus there are many interesting new features, as explained in this article on the new Password Monitor.
