Motorola Edge review: a return in style

Motorola Edge review: a return in style

Motorola Edge review - Motorola is back in charge. He did it first with the Razr, a folding that manages to combine usability and portability, and now continues with Motorola edge, a top of the range that seems really ready to battle with the competition. In fact, the newcomer really managed to surprise us, thanks to an almost seductive display, a well-optimized software and a decidedly above average autonomy.

However, we do not want to spoil the entire Motorola Edge review. Let's take a step back and start from one of the distinctive elements of this smartphone: the design.

Motorola Edge review: curved in style

Motorola Edge review: a return in styleThere are two aspects that will catch your eye once you hold Motorola Edge: the format and the display.
The smartphone is narrow and long, which allows you to handle it without difficulty with one hand. A choice that does not sacrifice the screen at all since the OLED panel is 6,67 inches. To characterize it we find the FullHD + resolution, a refresh rate of 90 Hz and above all the marked curvature of the edges. A choice that has no practical practical utility but which contributes to making the user experience truly immersive.

However, we find some forethought on the software side: a turn in the settings allows it to illuminate the outermost pixels to signal the arrival of a notification. In addition we find a small sidebar to which different functions have been entrusted: by dragging it towards the center, access a small quick menu with the apps you love most, a downward swipe will open the notification curtain and an upward swipe will show the apps in use. Very useful the double tap that resizes the screens. This allows you to use curved edges or not, so you can avoid losing content or having buttons located right along the sides.
But be careful: not all apps support it and the result is not always perfect. On Instagram, for example, the reduction of the space occupied by the Stories screen leads to a decentralization of the central button. Obviously nothing serious and, above all, nothing that cannot be solved with an update.

Let's leave the software to go back to talking about the screen. How is the Motorla Edge display? The OLED is, as usual, a guarantee. The colors are brilliant, the blacks deep and the maximum brightness allows you to fully enjoy the screen in any situation.

Motorola Edge review: a return in styleTowards the body, on the other hand, we have developed mixed feelings: a back cover in plastic on a $ 699 smartphone that's perhaps not the best choice Motorola could have made. Not so much in terms of solidity, given that the build quality is excellent in the face of a low weight (188 grams), but above all in feeling. To the touch, therefore, it is evident that we are dealing with a cheaper material, a material that also retains fingerprints very much.

The frame on the other hand is made of metal and houses the knurled power button and the volume rocker on the right; at the top we have the trolley for SIM and microSD while on the lower side we find the 3,5 mm jack, the USB-C input and the speaker.

We do not have - and it is a real shame - the IP68 certification for resistance to water and dust.

Almost two days of autonomy

Motorola Edge review: a return in style

Motorola Edge relies on a Snapdragon 765G processor, Adreno 620 GPU and 6 GB of RAM to give us all the power we need. No slowdowns and no hesitation for a hardware certainly inferior to Edge + but really suitable for facing all kinds of activities and stress.
Available 128 GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD should that not be enough for you.

On the connectivity side we have everything you need: WiFi ac, 5G support, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC. There is also dual SIM support if you need it.
As already mentioned there is also a 3,5 mm jack, a very pleasant surprise that allowed us to dust off the dear old headphones with the cable.
Alternatively you can use the two speakers to enjoy thegreat stereo sound offered by Motorola Edge.

The software based on Android 10 and very similar to the stock version of Google's operating system. In addition we have the functions linked to the edges of the display, already illustrated previously, and the Motorcycle Actions, which is a series of gestures that allow you to perform actions such as turning on the flashlight or starting the camera. Also present Moto Gametime, a dedicated menu that is activated when you start a game. What is it for? It actually performs several functions: you can take a screenshot, disable notifications, block calls, activate virtual L / R keys, and much more. In short, it is a sort of Swiss army knife that helps to focus on the gameplay.

Finally we arrive at the battery, one of Motorola Edge's most obvious strengths. With pretty heavy use - involving calls, texts, emails, games, social media, and more - we've got you covered almost two full days. You can manage to get to the evening of the second day by opting for 60 Hz instead of 90 Hz but not bad: that's already an incredible goal.

Once left dry you can count on fast charging at 18W but no wireless charging.

But the photographs?

Motorola Edge review: a return in styleMotorola Edge comes with three sensors: the main one from 64 megapixel f / 1.8, a wide angle from 16 megapixel f / 2.2 and finally uno zoom 2x da 8 megapixel f/2.4. This guarantees you maximum versatility since you have a lens just in case, but with what results?
The smartphone did not fare badly but it is not perfect. The main sensor, for example, gives away a good glance and captures surprisingly natural colors. Maybe something more could be done in terms of sharpness but the shots in good light conditions are very satisfying.

Not bad also the wide angle which, if necessary, is also used to shoot macros, while the 2x zoom gives us a good depth of field and a discreet bokeh.

Night mode isn't the best view so far but it defends itself well. The noise is greatly reduced and even the neon signs are sufficiently defined.

The selfies are pretty good, even if you don't have to expect too much detail, and promoted videos up to 4K and 30 fps. The latter are really well stabilized and can count on an excellent autofocus.
