Palm Phone review: what is a mini smartphone for?

Palm Phone it is not a classic smartphone. Or rather, technically it is, but there Palm, Inc - an American company specializing in the production of portable computers and phones - has decided to go against the tide by producing an extremely compact device. In a market that looks to the future with foldable models, designed to offer large displays while reducing space, is there really room for a mini smartphone?

Palm Phone Review

Let's start with the main feature; Palm Phone is small, very small. We are in fact in the presence of a device of 50.6 X 96.6 X 7.4mm for a total of 62 grams of weight, a truly impressive figure when you think about the 226 grams of the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The small size allowed the insertion of a LCD display of just 3,3 ", with HD resolution, which your eyes may struggle to get used to but don't panic: you can actually see everything you need. On the back instead we find one cover of good quality but too shiny on which the fingerprint.

As for the photographic sector, Palm Phone is equipped with a 12 megapixel rear lens with LED flash and di an 8 megapixel front camera. In short, many fewer sensors than those we see lately on smartphones, but in reality the photos taken are able to defend themselves well, thanks also to a autofocus effective.

A tiny living space

Under the mini body we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor and 3GB of RAM. They certainly do not represent the most powerful or the most recent resources but, for the use for which the smartphone is designed, they have proved to be adequate, as well as the internal memory of 32 GB, rigidly not expandable.

A separate discussion should be made instead for the battery from just 800 MhA. Although we are inclined to think that a screen of such small dimensions does not need a battery with a large capacity, the one present in this model is not enough even to get to the middle of the day with a charge (using the smartphone constantly). This data makes it practically unusable if you have chosen the Palm Phone as your main smartphone.

Finally, let's talk about the operating system. On board Android 8.1, a somewhat dated version compared to those seen on the most recent models but capable of defending itself well and ensuring compatibility with all applications on the Google Play Store.

We also point out the presence of a personalized and extremely simplified interface. Maybe a shock if you come from more complex UI, but really perfect for Palm Phone. Everything is close at hand. Literally.

Palm Phone review: who is it for?

At this point in our review, the question we need to ask is only one: Who is Palm Phone suitable for?

In our view this model caters to two types of public: technology enthusiasts and sportspeople. The first category might appreciate the particularity of this truly unusual device: small, practical and handy e made with high quality materials. Needless to say, it is not a performing device suitable for gaming lovers or who want to work with their phone. Consider it more a whim or a great way to start the digital detox.

The same characteristics of practicality and lightness will also be appreciated by Sports and by those who love to run. Thanks to its small size, in fact, Palm Phone is the ideal companion for those who want to keep fit without straying too far from music or a means of communication, perhaps leaving the bulky XL smartphone at home that risks hindering physical activity.

Price and availability

Price is undoubtedly one of the less attractive aspects of Palm Phone. Despite its small size and dated software,  the cost of this mini smartphone amounts to € 299. A quality-price ratio that is not exactly balanced but it could be enough to satisfy the needs we have just talked about. Perhaps with a few euros less he would have managed to win over more users.
