[Review] Razer Ornata Chroma - A winning compromise

In the last few years I have developed an insane mouse and keyboard fixation. Not because I prefer them to the classic controllers, but because they are called upon to perform two important tasks: to allow me to play when necessary and to support long work sessions. Two activities that are often difficult to reconcile, especially when it comes to choosing which one keyboard use.

Yes, because the classic membrane keyboards are often easier to use in the long run, with softer yet imprecise keys, while the mechanical ones make precision their strong point but risk getting tired when you play for prolonged periods of time.

In short, choosing is hell and this Razer He knows. This is why the company, which specializes in the construction of devices dedicated to gaming, has decided to give life to the new one Razer Ornata Chrome.

A little mechanical, a little membrane

The first thing I thought when I saw Ornata Chroma was "Why?". Why make a hole in the box that would allow everyone to touch the keys? What was so unusual that it forced Razer to think of an unusual box compared to the others he has accustomed us to? Simple: the Mecha-Membrane keys. A name that anticipates the philosophy behind these new buttons: combining the best of both worlds, that of mechanical keyboards and that of membrane keyboards. The keys of the Razer Ornata Chroma are therefore soft, with a decisive feedback and activated in the middle of the race. Ideal both for playing, as they guarantee a quick response, and for writing and working.

However, Mecha-Membrane technology is not the only plus of this peripheral. Razer Ornata Chroma is indeed accompanied by an ergonomic wrist rest, padded and covered in leather. A solution that makes the keyboard really comfortable to use, despite having a small flaw: the palm rest in fact is magnetic so detaching it is not particularly difficult. Obviously this does not mean that it will release while you use it but that any sudden movements will force you to reposition the palm rest as well.

Colorful is better

If this keyboard is called Ornata Chroma there is a reason and it is the usual and much appreciated possibility of customize lighting of the device.

To do this we will have to rely on software as always Razer Synapse which not only offers a number of predefined patterns, including Wave, Fire and Breathing, but also a configurator which helps you to reach truly extreme levels of customization.

But Synapse is not all for this. Its menu allows you to activate the gaming mode - by deactivating the keys you do not need during the game -, to set the macro and even view yours statistics to find out which keys you press most often while playing video games.

Almost perfect

However, the Razer Ornata Chroma is not without its flaws. In addition to the magnetic attachment of the palm rest, which may not drive you crazy, it weighs in fact the absence of dedicated multimedia keys, which will force you to use a combination of keys (FN + one of the function buttons). A rather annoying lack considering the price of this device, that is Euro 109,99.

Ultimately, however, this Ornata Chroma is definitely a great solution for those who use the PC for both play and work, also because - compared to other gaming keyboards - it is also available with the Italian layout, so you don't have to go crazy to find accented letters and symbols.

But take one thing into account: the click. Razer's new keyboard isn't particularly quiet, so try not to use it in the office!
